That was the best era. However, the Wii has New Super Mario Bros., and they re-released Super Mario All-Stars (originally for the SNES), as a 25th Anniversary Edition. _________________ <<<=== This is not the devil, this is the Red Guy from Cow and Chicken.
Depending on what you liked about side-scrollers, you might still be able to find something that you like.
For example, I suspect that you might enjoy Super Mario Galaxy 2. Some of it is 2D, some of it is 3D, but all of it is extremely linear. It doesn't pay lipservice to the "free-roam" crowd, it is just unashamedly an obstacle course.

Donkey Kong Country Returns has to be the hardest sidescroller I've ever played, which is weird because most games nowadays tend to be easier.
Not that I'm much good at any. Only sidescrollers I've ever beaten have been Sonic 3, Super Mario World(through Star World, anyway), and and maybe around four of the Kirby games up until Kirby 64. I am pretty awful at them. _________________ About suffering they were never wrong,

The PS3 version of "Rayman Origins" is the best looking side-scroller I've seen. The Nintendo Wii also has some great looking ones like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Kirby's Return to Dreamland.
The young gamers love 3D free roam, I do as well however I also love side scroll games they were fun, btw Capt I need to ask are you steven king? or is that just ur profile pic xD.

Um...do WayForward's games ring a bell? I know their downloadable titles are heavy hitters when it comes to using 2D action to its fullest extent. _________________ HE BETTER DO SOME 'SPLAINING BEFORE I DONE SOME FACE GUACAMOLE

There are still a few modern 2D games, usually with 2.5D graphics, where the characters and stuff look 3D, but being a side-scroller. There are some great side-scrolling games on the internet you can find, but good luck finding them. There are also plenty of rom hacks of 2D games, notably Super Mario World, and some are actually really good.
