Why do people say this?
Here is the scenario:
You have a mouthful of food as you are eating your dinner
Someone speaks to you and asks you a question
You answer and then get told it's rude to speak with your mouth full.
My answer "then don't bloody speak to me when I am eating!"
Where on earth do people get their logic from? _________________ For cross stitching, tapestry, other arts and crafts and the upcoming shark kingdom when I get around to it, visit: www.bumbleshobbyhome.blogspot.com |

Nowadays they get their logic from the internet, TV, any media, people around them, parents, friends, ETC
I also hate people who do that. I only talk with my mouth full if it's really important.
I also hate the people who say to chew with your mouth shut and then they always have their mouth wide open when they eat. |

I always just try to use body language to indicate I'll answer when I'm done chewing my food. _________________ It's like alice in wonderland except, my names not alice and this is the real world not a dream. |

I think I know the problem here. People generally don't expect an instant response when you are eating and happily wait until you have finished the current mouthful before replying. However as Aspies we somehow feel obliged to respond instantly rather than leave what we interpret as an awkward silence before speaking which we fear could be interpreted as ignoring the person asking the question and hence rude.
If the current mouthful is likely to take several moments chewing I've seen some people raise their index finger as a signal that they have heard the question and will reply in few moments time while continuing to chew with their mouth closed. _________________ - signature - |

I have the opposite problem. I adhere to this rule strongly, usually more so than people around me, so when I am asked a question while I am eating, I will finish the mouthful, however long that takes, then answer, and they get agitated at me for not answering immediately! |

| They may not realize you have food in your mouth and from my experience people hold their finger up or point to their mouth when I talk to them. They are letting me know they have food in their mouth so give them a moment for them to finish chewing and then swallow and they will then answer me. They are letting me know they are not ignoring me. So when someone speaks to you as your are eating, look at them and point to your mouth. You don't have to look at their eyes. |

"Wipes all the food off ones face" lol Don't forget to add water.
I was taught the manners. 1950s education videos are pritty funny on other subjects ( ones that are from then ).
( why does pritty sound more correct than the way its spelt pretty I noticed the /'pritē'\ ) |

| We're taught that's it's rude to talk with your mouth full. I mean, no one wants to see the chewed up food in your mouth! Plus, it's messy, too. It's also a choking hazard. The best thing to do is to put up your index finger to indicate that you want them to wait a minute, swallow your food, take a sip of your drink to wash it down, and then speak. That's what I would do. |

Aye, but then I have to rush my chewing and don't really get to enjoy my food as I hardly taste it.
There are reasons I prefer to eat alone and that is the main one...people who insist on talking whilst I am trying to focus on enjoying my dinner. _________________ For cross stitching, tapestry, other arts and crafts and the upcoming shark kingdom when I get around to it, visit: www.bumbleshobbyhome.blogspot.com |

I think it's fine at home or around family, but in public or around strangers or friends etc, I hold up one finger to let them know I will answer as soon as I swallow. _________________ Frances

I also wonder why this rule doesn't apply to chewing gum. Same difference, I'd think. _________________ Frances
