good Idea, how would it be hosted? I host a small mc server on ~1Mbps Upstream and it starts getting laggy at around the 5 player mark, so bandwidth will be a problem, perhaps running a virtual server on the amazon ec2 cloud may be an option which can be relatively cheap, but again it depends on how many people are interested as to what kind of server loads and costs would be, as I said before, I personally don't have the kind of resources needed to serve more than about 5 simultaneous users (due to crappy net speeds).

I like the idea, I myself can only host a 3 person server on tunngle (Port issues despite router).

| I am brand new to this site but I do have a Minecraft server up and running. It is still on 1.1 because I am waiting for updates but it does allow for up to 10 people playing at a time. |

I am very pleased to inform you that Minecraft has updated from 1.1, Here is an article about it, It's changes, and how to get it.

| I use Bukkit on my server so I have to wait till Bukkit and the mods get updated. This afternoon I am going to update it as many of the mods as I can so I runs. |

same here my 10 person server is at 1.1 because of mods as well.
wont change till buildcraft and industrialcraft both gets updated.
i think there are plenty of minecraft servers available, maybe we should simply have a sticky with all the servers that are open for everyone?

| what we could do is set up like a hamachi aspie network and someone who is willing and has a good computer could host the server and there would be no pvp or griefing and other general rules in other servers |

I set my server so it has pvp (and if people get annoying with it then they get rights removed) and I have no griefing using backup and block history mods. I also have Multiverse set up so if we want we could have AspieLand (needs a better name) where only certain users can build.
I also like Oodian's idea of having a pinned list of MC servers. It should also include what features the server has (like buildcraft and industrialcraft.) |

| Nope I have spent a lot of time keeping my server simple for the users. There have even been mods that I love that I refuse to add just because it requires the user to add stuff on their end. |

That sounds awesome, If anyone has problems staying connected to multiplayer or lag problems I made a program to help with this, It does that nice command line arg for minecraft that gives it more memory to use which is configurable. It also closes after Minecraft opens so there is no annoying command screen showing you all debug info  If anyone is interested I can easily give the source too it's in C# .net
I will be watching this topic, I would love to play with more people like me.. I have no friends on Minecraft besides 1 who is very busy :/ So it would be cool to see you guys in game.

With those you can just use the Technic server. It runs just like Minecraft but has the mods built in. It has a few more then just IC and BC but you can choose what ones you want on. |
