There's this guy who works with my sister at a bank and he has knocked on our door before and has done this morning. This guy has the worst bad breath I've ever come across. It literally smells like a mix of sh*t, wet dog and stale coffee. It's disgusting and being able to smell things better than most people do, it makes it even harder to tolerate. It gets me to a point of gagging and if he ever asked what was wrong, I'm apparently not allowed to tell him because it could hurt his feelings.
I really don't get the whole 'it might hurt their feelings' thing. To me it seems better for everyone including him to suffer one small moment of being embarrassed/hurt rather than carry on having a major problem.
Been in another situation around a friend of my sisters (she seriously needs new friends  ) This one had a BO problem and again it made me gag. We were all out in public and I'd been to the gym so I had deodorant on me and sprayed him with it, which apparently wasn't nice to do. But again, I don't see the problem. I know everyone else could smell him and would of been glad I did what I did, but because of social 'rules' no one will admit they were glad.
Do these 'rules' seem ridiculous to anyone else?
I do understand there's probably 'better' ways of dealing with these problems but those ways don't occur to me.

If you're close to someone I think its okay to broach the subject with them gently in private. The main thing is you're not supposed to humiliate someone about these things - generally people wouldn't choose to stink or have stink-breath if they knew about it. Even with people you don't know well I guess you could have a quiet word with them but don't be surprised if they respond by remedying the situation and never talking to you again.
I once came into a class late and noticed the technician had some oil smeared across his face. I knew he was about to catch public transport and had a dilemna - do I tell him and he might hate me, or do I let him get on public transport and go home and find it? I quietly pointed it out when no one else was around and at first he seemed embarrassed but after he went away and got cleaned up he thanked me and said he was a bit annoyed that everyone else had seen it and just left him to walk around looking stupid all day.
So yeah, these situations can be tough - could go either way... |

um.. there is nothing worse then running into a person with bad breath. its even worser when they dont relise they have it and wont stop talking
