Quoted from the Avaaz.org newsletter:

Quote:
Dear friends,

Right now, the US Congress is sneaking in a new law that gives them big brother spy powers over the entire web -- and they're hoping the world won't notice. We helped stop their Net attack last time, let's do it again.

Over 100 Members of Congress are backing a bill (CISPA) that would give private companies and the US government the right to spy on any of us at any time for as long as they want without a warrant. This is the third time the US Congress has tried to attack our Internet freedom. But we helped beat SOPA, and PIPA -- and now we can beat this new Big Brother law.

Our global outcry has played a leading role in protecting the Internet from governments eager to monitor and control what we do online. Let's stand together once again -- and beat this law for good. Sign the petition then forward to everyone who uses the Internet:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_cispa/?vl

Under the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), if a cyber threat is even suspected, companies we use to access the Internet will have the right to collect information on our activities, share that with the government, refuse to notify us that we are being watched and then use a blanket immunity clause to protect themselves from being sued for violation of privacy or any other illegal action. It's a crazy destruction of the privacy we all rely on in our everyday emails, Skype chats, web searches and more.

But we know that the US Congress is afraid of the world's response. This is the third time they have tried to rebrand their attempt to attack our Internet freedom and push it through under the radar, each time changing the law's name and hoping citizens would be asleep at the wheel. Already, Internet rights groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation have condemned the bill for its interference with basic privacy rights -- now it's time for us to speak out.

Sign the petition to Congress opposing CISPA. When we reach 250,000 signers our call will be delivered to each of the 100 US Representatives backing the bill:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_cispa/?vl

Internet freedom faces threats everyday from governments around the world -- but the US is best placed to attack the rights of Internet users because so much of the Net's infrastructure is located there. Our movement has, time and time again, proven that global public opinion can help beat back US threats to our Net. Let's do it again.

With hope,

Emma, Rewan, Ricken, Antonia, Lisa, Morgan, Mia, Pascal and the entire Avaaz team

Nothing like this is going to get passed until Obama gets reelected.

The government got really used to the level of control they had on old, 20th century media.
It drives them CRAZY that they don't have the same level of control over the internet. As with any government, they are obsessed with having absolute control and will continue to do all they can to increase their control.

This isn't going to stop, strike down one bill, another one pops up.

Quite a conundrum, what are we to do if we are to remain free? We can't just let the government push it's tentacles into every facet of our lives.

All I can hope for is that the government will eventually grow so big that it will collapse from it's own weight.

I have to say I'm quite surprised what little attention this has gotten, on this forum.

It is now DAYS AWAY until the voting. Spread around about this, to everyone you know, before it is too late. If you don't, then who will? If you are able to, organize non-violent demonstrations in your country - do whatever you can to stop this law.

Taken from the Avaaz.org newsletter:

Quote:
Dear friends,

Right now, corporations like Microsoft and Facebook are supporting a powerful new law that would allow the US to spy on almost everything we do online. But if enough of us speak out, we can demand that the corporations withdraw their support and stop the cyber-spying.

Right now, the US is poised to pass a new law that would permit US agents to spy on almost everything we do online. But we can stop them before the final vote.

Companies that we trust with our personal information, like Microsoft and Facebook, are key supporters of this bill that lets corporations share all user activity and content with US government agents without needing a warrant in the name of cyber-security -- nullifying privacy guarantees for almost everyone around the world, no matter where we live and surf online.

If enough of us speak out, we can stop companies that profit from our business from supporting cyber-spying. Sign the petition to these key net corporations now:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_cispa_corporate_global/?vl

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) would allow companies doing business in the US to collect exact records of all of our online activities and hand them over to the US government, without ever notifying us that we are being watched. No warrant, no legal cause and no due process required. To make matters worse, the bill provides the government and corporations with blanket immunity to protect them from being sued for violation of privacy and other illegal actions.

The bill’s supporters claim that consumer information will be protected, but the reality is that huge loopholes would make everything we do online fair game -- and nowadays, from banking to shopping, our private information is all stored on the Internet.

CISPA is being moved forward in Congress and will be voted upon in days. Let’s raise a massive outcry to stop corporations from giving the US a blank check to monitor our every move. Click below to take action:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_cispa_corporate_global/?vl

This year, we helped stop SOPA, PIPA and ACTA -- all dire threats to the Internet. Now, let’s block CISPA and end the US government attack on our Internet.

WIth hope and determination,

Dalia, Allison, Emma, Ricken, Rewan, Andrew, Wen-Hua, and the rest of the Avaaz team

lol, maybe someone just could close this thread, since it gets so little attention? The voting is TOMORROW.

I suppose the guy who wrote this article said it right:

I signed it and put it on facebook a few days ago, but did not comment on it.

Thats how they opperate...they wear the people down by fighting things like this and combined with moving it quickly through congress...then it passes without much more than a whisper. The crazy food security bill which places heavy regulations on small farmers and even has a section in it that says they can quarentine a whole area where no food comes in or goes out. Most Americans knew nothing of this, except small farmers which threw a fit, but their voices were not heard and it was passed in less than a week.

Most the bills taking away our freedom get passed like this, with overwhelming support in congress and quickly as possible, meanwhile they cant agree on a decent budget. I heard the ryan budget passed and he has been working on that for several years...finally like the intenet thing, it passed when the defenses were down.

Redistricting is causing alot of dems to lose their seats and even though repubs are unpopular, they may gain control of the senate. When that happens bills like this will pass like a thief in the night.

Jojo
