Say someone was born with aspergers or whatever. Let's pretend, then, that he becomes completely obsessed with interacting with other people. He spends his days experimenting with ways to interact with people. He spends his nights watching MTV and reading Dale Carnegie books. Eventually, he finds himself in possession of flawless social skills and Bill Clinton-esque charisma. Does he still have aspergers?

oh geez. It is like a personality trait. Asperger's/autism is NOT just about being social

A level of social dysfunction is required for an Aspergers diagnosis though, isn't it?

Why would MTV help? Laughing

One thing I am thinking about looking into is learning to read body language. Lets say I got really good at that, would I would still have aspergers. (just trying to make a more down to earth version of your scenerio).

Although someone could, by much study and/or coaching, become good at faking being NT, they are still Aspie. The brain structure doesn't change enough for the person to be cured..

I thought the Aspergers diagnosis was qualitative and not based on brain structure? I could be wrong, though. I'm not an autism expert.

Doing it (NT abilities/tendancies) is not the same as being it (NT).

Even if the only person who knows the difference is the AS person, the difference remains.

Nope, Asperger's is a genetic, congenital difference in brain wiring that does not get "rewired" when people learn to mimic social skills, because for most aspies that's all it is, mimicry, pretending. They don't inherently posses the skills, but they can fake it. It's like being an actor. Just because you play a Vulcan on Star Trek does not mean you turn into a green-blooded pointy-eared logician.

I think, technically, you can "get over it" but only in a nurture beats nature way.

There's more to Asperger's than social issues. It depends if you are putting on those social skills (something I never understood how to do) or they are truly learned behaviours and are practised so much it's no longer necessary to put them on.

I think if the training happens when young you decrease not just in social issues but all the need for repetition or having a fear of change. The brain changes every time we learn or experience something. So if you work on all the issues of Aspergers than you can decrease many symptoms that they could just be slightly annoying but not as impairing as they once were.

I'm a little bit better with adjusting to change. I've learned social skills but I also have a chemical problem that is stopping me from being social. My severe sensory issues get in the way though. The differences in my brain that give me my personality (disorders) may be very difficult to overcome. I have mild ODD and PDA. One is immediate disobedience for the sake of being disobedient (or disagreeing and arguing for stimulation) and the other avoiding everything asked of me unless I agree with it. I've overcome some parts of PDA. And I also have a hormone imbalance called PMDD. So these get in the way of me overcoming my symptoms along with my rigid thought patterns and need for routine. Being dependent on ADHD medication also gets in the way of making any progress. Progress can happen but usually on medication.

Personality’s can be changed, Temperaments can not. You can only try & suppress it, but a protected one can not.

If a person is short--sighted and wearing contact lenses, does this cure their visual impairment?

They could also learn to move within a familiar environment, but assuming that they come to another place, their strategy turns out to be useless.

It's the same with social skills. You can learn to fake them like an actor can fake a love scene, but it's still faking and pretending.

If you were not an Aspie, why would you have to learn social skills from the tube? If you were NT, social skills would come naturally and by itself.

What if I told you guys. That one of you were talking about Left Hemisphere & the other was talking about Right Hemisphere.

Then you assumed that is what made you be a girl or boy? Rather than your gender. I will list it:-

If you are more right-brained, you may tend to:-

Be playful in solving problems.
Respond to events with emotion.
Interpret body language easily.
Have a good sense of humour.
Process information subjectively.
Improvise.
Use metaphors & analogies when describing something.
Deal with several problems at once.
Use hands a lot in conversation.
Notice Pattens & think in pictures.
See solutions as approximate & evolving.
Not realize all that you know.

If you are more left-brained, you may tend to:-

Analyse pros & cons before taking action.
Be neat & tidy.
Base decisions on facts, not on sentimentality.
Give concrete examples when describing something,
Think in terms of right & wrong, good & bad.
Process experiences objectively.
Be keenly aware.
Proceed one step at a time.
Not pick up social cues easily.
Like to categorize.
Be idea-oriented.
Be comfortable with words & numbers.
Seek exact solutions.

Now question I have is:- “What have you people been contaminated with. In thinking it is Male or female.”? Aspartame?

Which says its Right Brained, since many males have been artists, humour, ideas, playing music, drawing & creative writing.

But they is also Males who are Left Brained. As in Maths, Writing, Speaking.

? correct way round?
Extroverted Female:- Left-Brained
Introverted Male:- Right-Brained.

Introverted Female:- Right-Brained.
Extroverted Male:- Left-Brained.

Oh that's interesting.

But still, too many variations in real live individuals...

I am putting it out of a Introvert book I have, written by a female Introvert. She says introverts are more likely to be left brained. ( stereotype view ).

Right:-

Controls the Left side of the body. I am right handed, I suck at maths & writing. Maybe I learned to use my right? but I suck with left scissor cutting.

Emotions, imagination, intuition, humour & ideas. Tick for me
Expressive arts, playing music, painting, drawing, creative writing. tick for me
Accessing perspective. tick for me
Recognizing patterns, shapes, faces & expressions. tick for me With Jess.

Left:-

Controls the right side of the body.

Understanding speech, reading & speaking. not that good, reading is ok though, I am a listener
Using language, writing. bad speller
Understanding, numbers, quantities & calculations. suck at mental arithmetic

----
Add another what if in:-

What if the other side develops later, unless you accelerate it. Causing too much stress to be a middle patterned person. Or maybe some people are middle patterned naturally.
