I've having trouble finding the kinds of clothes my son likes -- elastic waist (of course Smile ), soft fabrics -- particularly jersey or fleece. Tops are simple to find, it's mostly pants and shorts that are hard. I'd especially like to find some that look reasonably like what the other kids are wearing, because he's really starting to stick out and he's getting picked on at school.

Can anyone recommend any stores/websites?

What about under armour? The material is silky and soft. Other brands have similar type clothes that feel the same and are usually cheaper, like champion or nike.

How is he with athletic mesh? I've noticed lots of boys go to school in what are basically basketball outfits.

We are still getting away with sweats during the winter for the time being, but I've found that there are more acceptable (if more expensive) brand-name versions of sweats out there with a drawstring waist and pockets that kind of edge them over into the world of pants a bit; they don't have gathers at the ankles. (DS won't do the athletic mesh or any kind of nylon pants that make noise.) I have found these at Kohl's and other major department stores. (This is where I use the jacket cinch cord stops from REI to make tightening the waist easier. You can also cannibalize old jackets.)

I also wonder - in the winter, do you think your son might wear flannel-lined jeans if they had an elastic waist? I've found them at Wal-Mart, but since they're out of season you may have to check on ebay. Carhartt is one brand - I'd find a used pair online to see if they will work first (DS uses "adjustable waist" jeans, which he needs anyway as he's not traditionally-sized. Since they use a buttoned-in elastic band to adjust, he uses them without a belt as though they have an elastic waist.)

Also, we tried many belts, but until it broke, DS had good success with a plain web belt with a magnetic buckle, and was willing to wear jeans and pants that needed a belt; the key was keeping the pants waist large enough that he didn't have to unbutton/unzip and button/zip. We adjusted it once to the correct length, and all he had to do was thread it and put the two pieces together. I think I got that at Kohl's as well, but they should be everywhere.

Good luck!

I haven't tried mesh because *I* find it so repellant. Embarassed But I will ask him to try some on and see what he thinks.

Flannel lined jeans sound promising. Dressier looking sweats would probably work best. I'll keep my eyes open for those.

I would go with the basketball shorts idea as well. I am an an adult and that is still what I wear. Best thing is, being an aspie, your son and me can wear them year round because we never get cold :-p. Okay... so maybe you won't let your son do that, but in that case go with like warmup pants instead, thats what I did at that age.

well, it's not the best suggestion because is soo expensive, but hanna anderson catalog has soft clothes. when my daughter was little it was the only stuff she'd leave on. lol (she preferred no clothes) They have a nice selection of unisex play clothes. I would scour the second hand stores for them even if too big I'd save them for later.

Wllaful - I forget how old your son is. We swear by the Jumping Bean brand pants sold at Kohl's (of course since it is spring/summer they don't have any pants on the website only shorts) but the largest size they have is boys 7. The ones we get from there in the fall/winter have pockets on the leg like cargo pants but are fleece with an elastic waist. Target has a similar style but theirs are cut too long for our needs. Kohls currently has a Reebok brand pant on their website in a larger size http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/boys_820/bottoms/pants/PRD~957849/Reebok+Fleece+Pants++Boys+820.jsp. Unfortunately these only come in black or grey.

I have found some Jersey shorts at Old Navy, that should be fine. (Ordered online.) No luck with pants yet, but I haven't really had time to check out the stores.

Bombaloo, I almost ordered those very pants the other day! Decided against it because he's kind of hard to fit -- he's very tall for his age (which is 10) but he has a long torso and shorter legs. (Just like me... of all the inconvenient body shapes, I tell ya. I'm on the tall side of average, but I need to buy petite pants.) I need to go to the store and see if they have them in stock.
