So, I was in remedial math at my college. I passed both semesters of it with a C. I failed the "Exit test". now my choices are to either repeat BOTH parts of the remedial math.. thus wasting 2 more semesters.. in order to then fail the Exit test again.. and then be kicked out of school for a year, or drop out of school now. The problem is, there are no schools in my state which will let me in without making me do these same classes. And I can't seem to find any schools in any other states that will let me in without taking this damn COMPASS test. I guess the ACT corporation has greased enough palms to get their scam software installed pretty much everywhere.

I have all A's in all my other classes. I have a 4.0gpa. The school is being completely, unrelentingly, and infuriatingly pigheaded about this. I feel like I've been fleeced and have wasted 2 semesters since now I can't continue. I'm going to be stuck forever with 18 credits and no ability to ever get enough to get a degree. All because I can't factor a f***ing polynomial. I had no idea how much weight they put on these goddamn math classes. I passed their classes, I only failed the exit test by 1 f***ing points. I deserve to continue on and do what I'm good at. But they won't let me.

My only option at this point is to find a school which will let me do college algebra online. But the only one I've found so far is BYU, and they do 4 proctored exams and don't allow you to use a Ti-84 for any exams. I know I'd fail them without that, and I don't have 600$ to gamble with in the hopes of being able to pass. I barely scraped by with a C in my remedial classes. I HATE MATH.

I'm so angry now I can't even speak straight. I have no idea what to do about this.

So, to be honest, I don't completely understand all of your post, and I don't know what part of the world you are in, because that obviously makes a difference, but I got my BA from National University out of California completely online. It is completely online-no proctored exams. I cannot say if you will have to take any entrance exams-but I didn't, and I am pretty sure they would have algebra. I am in the States, but I had people in my classes as far away as China.
Good luck getting things worked out-don't give up

About grade 11 math was where I started to bomb. I failed miserably, but I went back during my first sem of university and redid it all. Just keep at it till you feel it click!! If you get this down it will open many doors for you.

I could have gone on with just the miserable grades from highschool, but I felt it was worth it to go over it again. And it was!

Lol. I'm doing remedial math now it's a pain.

I got an A doing remedial Pre-Algebra mostly because it was a student driven computer program called My Math Lab. If you're persistent enough and work at it you get it.

Now I'm in regular Algebra that is all lecture based and it's a struggle. I can see myself at a C level unless I really buckle down. I did just get some tutoring help that pointed out a few serious flaws in my equation solutions though.

Algebra is so damn weird though it seems unnatural. Mostly because the class excludes good ol' Arithmetic. I feel like you should be able to combine the two as long as you get right answers. But if I successfully get the right answer with common sense arithmetic I only get partial credit.

I'd also say when I look at Algebra it seems like a 2nd language. I mean compare the grammar structures of English translated to German for example. The word order follows different rules and is shifted around.

"Do you speak German" might be more like Speak you German
or Sprechen Sie Deutch?

I can only understand a little German switches around like I can only a little German understand.
or ich kann nur ein bissel deutsch verstehen

Or 3x-y=5 switches around to y=3x-5

I guess to me I'm saying Arithmetic is more familiar like English while Algebra almost really seems foreign. Even beyond changing numbers is the weird terminology like Polynomial or Hypotenuse.

I'm way better at German than Math. I have an A in german but a C in math.

I don't know what to do about this, none of the schools will let me take an online math class without passing one of these damn competency tests firsts so I can't even just end run around my school and do it at another one..

Basically I'm going to wind up having to drop out of college, even though I have A's in all my college level classes, because I can't do Highschool level math.

If you're not getting a degree in a subject where you need to use math, what is the point of making you pass a math course? Rolling Eyes

I'm not 100% sure this is a country wide standard, but it is a State Wide standard in my state. In order to obtain a BA, which is 4 years, a student spends the first 2 years takeing "Core Classes" which are required, for EVERYONE, regardless of Major to take.. Typically these require 1 College Algebra Class and 1 Statistics class. Statistics is not that hard.. I don't have many problems with it.. it's straight up conversion of data into something usable.. but Algebra is just theory and is never explained in a way which makes sense to me. Mainly because they never tell me what I can use it for. Basically they don't care what you are majoring in, it could be interpretive dance, or underwater basket weaving and they would still make you take and pass a college algebra class with a C or better.

Statistics I might actually use. But Algebra I've managed to go the last 10 years without using once in any kind of actionable way ( I realize I use it passively all the time, as do we all) and I'm sure I can go the next 50 years in much the same way.

Sometimes you have to jump through a few hoops to get what you want. It's not pleasant-but it's life. As I look at the admissions for NU I see that you would have to take the accuplacer-but why is that such a big deal. Even if worst case scenario, they tell you you have to take their remedial math-so you find a tutor, and each class there is only 1 month. So the first month you take the remedial, the second your hopefully able to make it through college allgebra. I would definitely have someone help me through both courses. If all goes well, 2 months and you can move on. An education is too important to throw away.

Sometimes you can find another way. I don't test well, and I had to take an entrance exam to be accepted into a master's program. I bombed-you guessed it- the math. It made my choice of school easy, because there was 1 school that had the program that I wanted and did not require the GRE. So sometimes you get lucky. The GRE is supposed to predict how well someone will do in a masters program, but it's a bunch of bull. I am in the program right now and have a 4.0-so much for their predictions. My point is that sometimes you can beat the system and sometimes you have to play along with it.

I hear ya. I could not finish my AA degree or continue to my bachelors until the state of florida dropped the idiotic CLAST requirement (3.0gpa in math/english). I had perfect A's in all classes except the two 'C' 's in math (here we are required to have two math classes to graduate). Two Cs does not give you a 3.0 gpa in math.

Took 10 years for them to drop it. The semester after they dropped it I took my last two required courses, got my AA, moved on to univ and now im graduating next spring.

Question for you is: Are you close to graduation with a bachelors degree or are you doing a college AA to then transfer to a 4 year univ?

If you're doing the bachelors then you're literally stuck with that institution as all universities require the last 30 something credit hours to be done in their institution. Unless you have the finances to transfer to another state/univ system and take another 30 credits and graduate there.

If its an AA then you can certainly look at moving out of state to another univ. to get a degree. I know the state of Maryland does not require more than a single C in a math course to let you graduate from a non-science/engineering degree. In Florida you dont need more than a 2.5 GPA in math as a requirement from the university system (not a state mandate)...which is, you need two C's in math classes.

I'm just at an AA right now, I was hoping to transfer to a 4 year in the spring, but unless I can find some alternative to this math class crap to do over the summer it will be at least fall 2013 before I can transfer and I will have spend 2 full years as a freshman. I've had virtually no luck at all finding a school which doesn't have some sort of math requirement, and I personally just don't understand why they do it.. the only reason I can think of is the same reason they have poly sci classes.. to give math and poly sci majors jobs..

0097 and 0098, though some schools lump them together as 0099. Basically it's review of all the stuff from about 9th-12th grade math classes.. From Pre-Algebra to highschool Algebra, geometry and trig concepts.

and I'm in Georgia. the school I'm at would accept Quantative Reasoning which is for "non Math Majors" but most 4 year schools won't accept that as a transfer credit so it leaves me with no alternative but to take algebra instead.

I almost took some classes here. It says the prereq is a c in prealgebra-which is what you have right? I am still looking for admissions testing info.

well the problem is my school won't give me the C because I can't pass the exit test. They have changed my C to an "IP" or "In Progress" becuase I failed the exit..

I basically need a school which requires NO pre-reqs..
