I enjoy playing SNES Mario games but past that I am purely a PS2-onwards player. I can play old games, but they just frustrate me because you don't get very much gameplay out of them and they are so damn hard generally, sicne back then gameplay didn't seem to be moderated well. How is it I can beat Dante's Inferno and half of Mass Effect 2 while not being able to get to world 2 despite hours of trying for instance? The difficulty on them is crazy high.

My guess is that most retro gamers grew up on the consoles that they enjoy most. I grew up on the PS1 and Nintendo 64 but can't play either console now, the era between 2D and 3D graphics is just painful to look at.

I think old games were incredibly hard because of an Arcade's mindset.

Games were hard so you'd have to spend more coins to keep playing, or give the place to other people (more coins).

When gaming went into households and the need of quick rotation died, a more (in my opinion) healthy and enjoyable form of gaming was born.

Well... don't knoe if that's true, the thought just crossed my mind.

I can play anything from the original NES onward. I'm a hardcore gamer. The reason older (NES, in particular) games were so hard was because they were so short. Think about it. These days you have games that can give you 20+ hours of playtime. And they aren't all that difficult, although fun to play. That's because of storylines and extras. Older games didn't have much (if anything) in the way of storylines. So the only way to keep you playing, and to make sure you got your money's worth from the game, was to make it insanely difficult to finish. There were games that I spent weeks or months on, but when I mastered them I could play through in a couple hours. Now when I play games, I'll spend months on them, but it's not because they are too difficult. It's because I'm blasting through a longer, and more involved, storyline. I could go on and on about this (special interest), but I'll stop here. Wink

Mostly old games on old systems. I'd say out of the 3 systems of this generation I preferred the Wii because of it's adventure / horror titles that were more reminiscent of gaming in the 32-128bit days (Resident Evil games, Project Zero games, all the point and click games).

Both. I just bought 15-20 SNES games but I also play a lot of PS3 games.

This is like the 200th thread on the 1st page that's basically the same topic 0_o... But anyways I mainly play retro games rather than new games because there just aren't very many new games that come out anymore that interest me...

They should tidy this place up a bit and remind people to have a look first before posting.

But dude... Did you look at the 1st page? I'm not trying to mean or anything so don't take me the wrong way. But there are several threads that are VERY similar to this one one the very first page.

I still own my old Nintendo consoles... and I bought a used NES a while back because my original one was sold years ago.

I wonder how a NES would look on a 50" TV. Like an animated mosaic, most likely.
