I cringe when I hear my speaking voice played back, though I've gotten to where I can live mostly with my 'singing' voice and play that for others. Even then I have a hard time feeling comfortable singing live. Same thing with pictures, and the mirror for that matter. I don't think it's Body Dysmorphic, I can get to where I can select the 'best' photo and have a 'good side'. Just always made me a little uneasy

It doesn't really bother me to see / hear myself on recordings.

*cringe*

I can't stand it. I don't like how my voice sounds, and hearing myself in a recorded conversation is weird because it highlights how hard it is for me to get words out the way I want sometimes. I'm also really awkward on camera.

To be fair, I think many people dislike seeing themselves on camera or hearing their voice. That said, I don't think I'll be a radio DJ or a TV personality anytime soon...

Personally, I hate it with a passion and avoid it at all costs. I can force myself to cooperate when they want to film me or take my picture, but I don't like looking at the result. The only reason I use mirrors is to make sure I don't have some kind of disgusting smudge on my face or embarrassing hair. And I hate hate hate hearing my recorded voice, I hate having to record the message on my voicemail because then I have to listen to it play back to make sure it's audible and that I got the timing right. And that's the only instance I can think of hearing my own voice recorded in at least 15 years, I avoid it so well.

Funny enough, when it comes to photos, films, etc. I can't get enough. I see pictures as a proof that I was there with these persons on that time, so I have no problem at all getting taken my picture.

But I do understand listening to my voice. In my own head it sounds deep, almost like a boy's but when I hear a recording it's like listening to a high pitched siren. How can anyone cope with listening to me!?

I'm not a fan of hearing my voice on a recording, and I feel I appear awkward on video.

I like to be the one taking the pictures for that exact same reason, I just don't want to be in the frame if I can help it. Not to mention the mental distance being behind a camera can provide at large family gatherings.

Hearing my recorded voice is a problem to me too, it makes me cringe. I guess I have a totally different perception of how my voice sounds (or should sound) than it does in reality.

Video recordings don't bother me as much, photos are OK, and the least stressful of all for me is looking at my reflection in the mirror. What makes me wonder is that I see a different person in the mirror than in the pictures. Confused

I've always hated it, it makes me realise what a droning blur my voice is.

I don't like to see myself in photos or videos either, because I don't see the face as being 'me'.

This all relates to my idea of aspergers as a state of not having a coherent sense of 'self' as a 'social actor'. The inner experience of my mind is a sort of cloud of ideas and impressions. To connect that cloud with a physical presence, as seen by others, is unnerving.

In spite of this, I once appeared on a TV quiz show. I couldn't bear to watch the recording more than once though.

I have the same experience. I look alright in a mirror. Maybe because the image is reversed. I think I'll try reversing some photos of myself on the computer to see if I can relate to them better.

My issue with pictures, movies, mirrors is kind of like that, but its not that I don't have a coherent sense of 'self', it's that what I see in those things doesn't match the image in my own mind, even if I couldn't define precisely what that image is. I just know that seeing myself in pictures and movies make me think along the lines of "I don't look anything like that, how did that happen?" There have even been times when I've looked through pictures friends have taken and when I find one of myself that isn't from a good angle or out of focus in a certain way, I have asked them who it was. They seem to find it amusing when they have to tell me I'm looking at a picture of myself.

Spent many years shouting in microphone, noise behind me. That's OK, better for me than audience. But speaking prose, or worse, being filmed talking prose, not fun. Is that me? No wonder moment. Of course we can never know what others see other than how they can get their own needs met.

I cringe at how sweet I sound(I'm not sweet at all) and how soft and girly my voice is... pictures just... I don't cringe but I don't like to look at them for long or I start making a mental list of flaws that in my mind are grossly exaggerated.

It's awful! I hate it!!! I can some times find a decent picture of myself (like the one I use here as my avatar), but I'm soooo picky. My recorded voice in intolerable to me.

I'm like that too. I can't hear or see myself on video without freaking out. I can't look at pictures of myself without being overly critical. Sometimes I even refuse to look into the mirror because I just can't bear to see myself.
