Putting this in The Haven to shield others from possible dark subject matter.
If you are in a dark place maybe time to stop reading and go do something that makes you happy.
Anyone else have an interest in death?
I do not mean an interest in killing yourself, killing others or involving animals.
To expose a secret of mine - I am interested in death.
Graveyards, mummies, crypts and memento mori photo's are all things I've always have had an interest in, even as a child mummies were one of my 'special interests' - this I consider macabre but it's not too unusual, however last night my boyfriend criticised me for looking at the famous photo of Evelyn McHale (aka 'the most beautiful suicide') as this apparently crosses a line. I don't understand why death is so taboo or such an unusual subject in which to be interested. In my opinion it only becomes dark or worrying when I start looking through certain web sites for photo's and videos of more grizzly deaths such as video's of suicide (note I am not nor have I ever been suicidal). I only indulge this particular interest occasionally, and don't look to be disrespectful to the dead or just for gore but out of interest in death, although I sometimes start to feel like I'm maybe pushing to desensitise myself and I feel guilty about viewing such material given the sort of disrespectful attitudes I see from those who view this material on a more regular basis.
The want to look at death is how I 'cope' - I feel the need to fully expose my senses to the death in order to process.
In the case of people I know it's to cope with their death; when my best friend died in my teens I taped news reports, took a newspaper cutting showing his crashed car, visited the site to see the blood, took broken pieces of the car light, and if I could have seen his body I would have. I had to fully embrace what happened. In the case of strangers I guess it's more a case of trying to understand the nature of death in general by absorbing as much as possible, even if it's grizzly. I wonder if I'm abnormal.

| No, it's not strange to be interested (within the parameters you mention). But a lot of people are frightened of it and don't like to be reminded. |

Everybody has their own interests. If everybody had the same interests, we'd all want the same job. Then there'd be a billion mathematicians but no janitors.
Don't take this the wrong way, please. It sounds like I'm making a joke, but I'm being absolutely serious: Maybe you should become a mortician. My sister-in-law worked with a mortician for a while and almost became one herself, so it's a field I have some understanding of.
I guess what I'm trying to say is: Some of us need to build bridges and some of us need to be morticians. Maybe that's your calling. |

| I am both frightened and curious of death. I like to visit cemeteries because of the art and the history. I can take pictures of gravestones and go home and research these peoples' lives. Death is so very final, but we really don't know a lot about it. |
