I am non-drinker so the whole business of "substituting" wine with something simply doesn't apply to me. I would not derive pleasure from being drunk nor do I enjoy the taste of real alcohol either (it tastes way too strong and it would be torture to try to drink it). So I am a very rare case of someone who enjoyed de-alcoholized wine FOR ITS OWN SAKE. The reason I like de-alcoholized wine is that it is sour and when it is really hot and I am thirsty drinking things that are sour helps to quench the thirst. Now, in case of real alcohol it would never work since alcohol is dehydrating. But in case of de-alcoholized wine, its sour taste is no longer "cancelled out" by the above dehydrating effect hence it is something I enjoy. For some weird reason, though, de-alcoholized wine doesn't help me quench my thirst on a long run (don't understand why). But at least the process of drinking it is enjoyable when I am thirsty. How about you guys? Have any of you tried it for thirst reasons?

Pardon my ignorance but I don't recall ever hearing of such a thing as this. Where does one find such a product, and how does it differ from ordinary grape juice? But I can relate to you; I drink diet Coke because with the amount of caffeine I consume regular cola produces too much stomach acid
(Maybe this belongs in the Random thread unless this happens to do with AS)

I've never tried it but if you're going on a long run you should start hydrating long before you run. I think the idea would be to stay hydrated not quench your thirst. Drink water for hydration and whatever you like for enjoyment  |

I've never even seen the product. I would try it just to see what it tastes like. I might not like it though. I don't know. I don't like decaffeinated coffee much. |

I tried dealcoholized wine before, it still has a tad bit of alcohol in it, like .5%. It's pretty good, but I'd say alcoholized wine does taste better. If you wanna dealcoholize wine, you can just boil it. I think the reason the dealcoholized wine tastes worse is because it's probably dealcoholized by boiling, so yeah. Probably for thirst, what you'd wanna do is, get the dealcoholized wine and then water it down, I do that with grape juice.
The other thing you gotta keep in mind with wine is, it all tastes different by types and brands, zinfadel will taste different than a straight out red wine, white wine will taste different, champagne, etc.
But, if I didn't have to be paranoid about DUIs, I'd probably drink alcoholized wine like the old days, just as a barely alcoholized beverage. That or drink kvass or kinderbeer kinda stuff.
If you like dealcoholized wine, you might like the random Malta drinks in the Spanish section of the grocery store, basically a really dark sugary non alcoholic beer. But they're like 300+ calories per 12oz bottle, though.
