The National Rifle Association is taking its relationship with racing to a new level as the title sponsor of a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

The deal with Texas Motor Speedway comes at a time when the NRA is involved in a renewed debate on gun violence in the wake of the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"It's not about politics. It's about sports marketing," TMS president Eddie Gossage said Monday after the announcement of the one-year agreement with the NRA that includes a renewal option.

The April 13 race at Texas, the first scheduled night race in the Cup Series this season, will be known as the NRA 500.

This is not the NRA's first title sponsorship in NASCAR. The group sponsored the second-tier Nationwide race last September at Atlanta, which like Texas is owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc.

"They saw it was obviously a very attractive sports marketing opportunity and seized it. That's what it's all about," Gossage said. "It's about putting on one of the great sporting events in America. I know in Atlanta last year they saluted a lot of the people that make America free. They are going to salute American freedoms and American families with this race. That's their plan so it seemed to be a good fit."

Okay, alright, I'll jump in the debate.

Republican President Ronald Reagan advocated for and signed the Brady Bill.

And I think Republican President George Bush, Sr. advocated for and signed the assault weapons ban.

That was Clinton that did both of those.

I do believe in safety and security. If someone feels safer with a gun, I think they should go ahead and own a gun. Just don't like it take the place of, for example, good window locks of the kind you can quickly undo with a thumb screw and get out. And does the person have a good deadbolt?---And I mean a goddamn good one.

I'm also a believer in marital arts. In fact, the two of them might go together well. For with a gun, you may not always have the gun, or the person may get a jump on you and have their gun out first. Marital arts provides somewhat of an element of surprise. Even a couple of months with ju jitsu or karate or one of the other striking arts can make a difference. Although it still does matter your size versus the size of the attacker.

And for schoolyard fights and/or nonlethal bar room fights, I like the idea of boxing. In fact, I've started to develop a whole approach of tight, defensive boxing to a draw because you're not trying to humiliate someone you're likely to see again (and if I happen to win, I hope to win gracefully without bragging and if a friend starts to brag on my behalf, I hope to tell him or her, please don't make a big deal about it).
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt134616.html
And the sizes of the two people makes a definite difference here. Please don't misunderstand me, I am in favor of walking away from a fight when a person reasonably can. And studying boxing with the proviso that a person doesn't want to take a bunch of blows to the head during training because all that stuff about post-concussion syndrome, and even cumulative lesser blows, is largely true. And just like football helmets don't really protect, presumably neither does boxing headgear.

=================================

Regarding the politics, well, I did hear Ronnie son's Michael Reagan, who's a conservative commentator, field a question some years ago. The caller asked, Hey, your father signed the Brady Bill. And Michael essentially answered, My father primarily signed the bill out of respect to James Brady. And just because my father is a great American, and he is, does not mean he's right about everything.

With the assault weapons ban, I'm less sure which president. You know, I do like history and politics, and I might well end up looking it up. I just can't make any guarantees about time frame.

And what I personally think? Generally, I think we should ban large-capacity magazines.

Oh my, to think I used to watch this sport every week. NASCAR has gone downhill so fast and sponsorships or so hard to come by i'm not surprised, the cost is so low now a days(hance the Autism Speaks 400 at dover). There are drivers in Sprint Cup buying their ride keeping talented drivers out of them all becouse they are not rich or don't have their own sponsors. I'll stick to the local race tracks then where I can drive my own race car and litter it with left leaning slogans if I so chose, i'm sure I will be busy when this race is on, its just a cookie cutter track anyway with a bunch of premadonnas racing! I honestly feel embarrised when I talk to people I knew years ago who still think i'm right into this NASCAR racing thing. Please go to a local stock car race like me instead of watching this. Worse it will be televised on FOX so I can see it now.

On the topic of the aut speaks 400 I wonder how much they pay to maintain that donor program? They have partners however i'm sure cash changes hands somewhere.

Who in in this relationship - NASCAR or the NRA - will look even more like rednecks than they already do... because of this relationship.

Well the race ran today, I nothing better I could do today so I watched most of it, or at least listened to most of it as background noise. I noticed that on the telecast the announcers never mentioned the "NRA 500" just they were in Texas at Texas Motor Speedway. This is what NASCAR has to say, we have got give them some credit here. This may have been the last NRA 500.

Quote:
•NASCAR will evaluate future race sponsorships: With the NRA 500 drawing attention just for the name of the race, NASCAR will take a closer look at race sponsorships in the future, the sanctioning body said in a statement Thursday. Tracks negotiate their own naming rights deals, and Texas Motor Speedway announced last month that the National Rifle Association would sponsor its Sprint Cup Series race, scheduled for Saturday night. The sanctioning agreement tracks have with NASCAR states that "NASCAR reserves the right to approve or disapprove any advertising, sponsorship or similar agreement in connection with the event." NASCAR approved the sponsorship, and Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said Thursday there has been no public outcry over the sponsorship. But NASCAR spokesman David Higdon released a statement that indicated the timing of a sponsorship and the perception of NASCAR will be used to determine whether to approve race sponsorships in the future. "The NRA's sponsorship of the event at Texas Motor Speedway fit within existing parameters that NASCAR affords tracks in securing partnerships," the NASCAR statement said. "However, this situation has made it clear that we need to take a closer look at our approval process moving forward, as current circumstances need to be factored in when making decisions."(Sporting News)(4-12-2013)

This is all you need to know about NASCAR:

  • Go fast.
  • Turn left.
  • Image
  • Repeat.

If America is ever invaded (yes, yes, it is unlikely) I can tell you who will put up a fight and who will get used to the "new reality".

Pinko Stinko liberals are generally not the stuff of which heroes are made. They can explain and rationalize anything regardless of how illogical and evil.

The guys who fought, bled and died on the beaches of Normandy were mostly white lower middle class working stiffs, merchants and farmers. Not college trained "intellectuals". I owe more to them than the pinko stinko Liberals. Once American got into the fight (with some reluctance) it was the less "brainy" and more solid types who save our nation. The pinko stinko liberals got us into the war (after all we had to save their Russian comrades). It was mostly white guys who never finished high school who did the job.

Not every brainy person has a college degree - my Dad, who worked for most of his adult years in an aluminum plant, was one such. And despite being a working class guy, he was about as much a pinko stinko liberal as they come - just like his son (that's me).
To say every working class or rural guy is going to be unintellectual and conservative is a myth and stereotype.
