This guy reading the newspaper on the subway is Keanu Reeves.

He is from a problematic family. His father was arrested when he was 12 for drug dealing and his mother was a stripper. His family moved to Canada and there he had several step dads.

He watched his girlfriend die. They were about to get married, and she died in a car accident. And also before that she had lost her baby. Since then Keanu avoids serious relationships and having kids.

He's one of the only Hollywood stars without a Mansion. He said: 'I live in a flat, I have everything that I need at anytime, why choose an empty house?'

One of his best friends died by overdose, he was River Phoenix (Joaquin Phoenix's brother). Almost in the same year Keanu's father was arrested again.

His younger sister had leukemia. Today she is cured, and he donated 70% of his gains from the movie Matrix to Hospitals that treat leukemia.

In one of his birthdays, he got to a little candy shop and bought him a cake, and started eating alone. If a fan walked by he would talk to them and offer some of the cake.

He doesn't have bodyguards, and he doesn't wear fancy clothes.

When they asked him about 'Sad Keanu', he replied: 'You need to be happy to live, I don't.'"

I loved reading this so much because I relate to him a lot when he answered the question about happiness, and basically saying why have more than you need when you don't need it. I mean if I ever become accountant and receive what is likely to be 20,000 - 30,000+ When I've bought all the things that I need to keep myself and my mind occupied and settled I'm going to think:- "what am I going to do with the extra thousands I have? I don't actually need this". That's why sometimes I regret going to university and further more starting this accountancy course. I could have everything I need and get everything I feel I need from just a simple fulltime job, simple as that, anything extra is pointless.

That's one of the things that's bugging me most in my life right now, working for something that I don't actually need and wasting my time and my life stressing about this thing I'm working towards when I should be spending time just relaxing and enjoying the things I already have.

What are your thoughts on this?

I basically agree with the idea. I would rather relax and live happily doing thing I enjoy (reading, eating etc) than stressing about earning more and getting extra luxury that I don't really need. The only problem is that I worry a lot about things that could go wrong in life. What if this happens or that happens... Particularly because I'm totally alone, if things go wrong there's no one to support me. That makes me feel I need to have some extra - contingency reserve or something, but not luxury.

my life motto, at the moment.
I look back through my bank statements and laugh at the fact I brought home $950.00 a week and still overdrafted my account on thursday!
to be in my 20's again!

I wonder how many of us are focused on what we want (or think that we want) rather than what we need.

I have way too much stuff, it has become a burden, rather than a pleasure.

Would I be happier in a studio apartment, with one of each item?

The only things I could not give up are my pets...they are my only companions.

Somehow, Mr. Reeves has the inner security to not need 'things'.

I envy him that, rather than all of his fame and success.

Not that this is highly relevant to the actual overall point of your post, but the source I read said that his girlfriend died alone, after they may have had an argument and she left a party, got into her car to go home, losing control on a bend during which the car flipped/crashed. He wasn't there and if he was he might not be alive today. Despite the fact that she had been pregnant and had a miscarriage, apparently there was no sign there was a wedding planned, and their relationship was under strain after the baby was lost.

Also, he apparently used to live in hotels, not flats, and eventually he bought a house in LA because he realised it was time he had his own space and some roots.

I don't think he quite means that you don't need things to live, I think by saying that "You need to be happy to live, I don't." (I'm trusting your quote without checking it) that you don't need to walk around with a cheesy grin plastered on your face to live. I've read about his acts of generosity to people, so clearly he wants to share some of his millions, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he believes that you don't need 'things' in your life. Any sensible person would agree (probably including him) that 'things' don't make you happy. (Although they can sure ease the ride! Laughing )

He bought all of the crew on one of his films motorbikes, he wouldn't have done that if owning his own bike(s) didn't make him happy, to be able to understand that receiving possessions makes other people happy too.

I think that is very radical. Like saying happiness is just another thing you don't really need.

I'm thinking if you can let go of happiness and don't want to happy, it will make you more happy because it is another want gone. chin

Happiness is the ultimate want...

It's sad that there's lots of people especially in Hollywood who seem to subscribe to that. Maybe being practical makes him happy. I'm kind of like that. I don't have many possessions because I don't see a need for them. My intrest are watching TV, listening to music,, watching vids, & other basic internet things.
