i was browsing the links section here, and i came across another AS forum for NT's, someone there started a topic about some parents sue the school there kid goes too. the kid was having a fit and the teacher, AS PUNISHMENT put the kid in this thing called a body sock, apperently the body sock is supposed to calm aspies and auties down and helps with sensory overload and stuff like that. it looks scary to me. i am not sure what to think of it: my dad says it might work, since i am comforted by enclose small spaces. but the stuff the person selling the body sock sells are kind of SCARY!!!! like he has stuff that put weight on a autie's or aspie's lap, shoulders, or chest that keeps the aspie/autie from moving around, SCARY!!! do you think it will help or do think it's abusive or torture?

| The weights are very light and only intended to provide a little pressure or touch that may help those with sensory issues become more settled and aware of their body position, ect. It is not literally to weigh a person down so they can not move around easily. For those who have no sensory issues it wouldn't apply. |

I have a chainmail shirt. I was actually logging in to tell all of you about it. Its welded, very light, about 6 pounds. Its sized as 46 inches in the chest, but has about 15% stretch, so it fits my 48 chest snug, but not tight.
It provides a weight and pressure, which i've always found nice. I got it at www.theringlord.com. Its called a mesh shirt, and it cost me... lots. 400 bucks? I'll take a picture of it tomorrow or something.
Anyway, I wear a black Tshirt under it, cause can be irritating after several hours without. then I put another black T over it when I go clubbing. I do this because its kinda like a dirty little secret, if you know what I mean. I wouldnt want people in a club to know I am wearing it, as drunken idiots may be tempted to help me 'test it'.
If its ok with the mods, I will post a direct link to the sale page. Let me know either way. |

WOW, I hope you don't get into trouble where they have to try to rip off your shirt! It certainly looks better than I imagined it.

Imagining it worked brilliantly, I would say "no"
Reason being is I believe the child may become, in some cases, totally dependent on it. I think the time would be better spent teaching the child, mentally, how to deal with it.
As for the weights on the children's laps? No way. |

there are more places that sell bodysocks, and i think it would be a bad idea to wear it everywhere. you couldnt walk or see where you are going....
and i beleive the wheights are NOT to keep the kid from moving, but to calm them down, i guessed and guessed wrong, it didn't state why, but i DO have my eye on those wheighted blankets! kind of...

i am not as fond of the pictures, or the address, but they are exactly the same
i am still yet to decide if i want them or not. we just picked up some window curtains and poles, we are gunna hang the curtains from the ceiling in my room around my bed: i found that i get a "happy" feeling with this enclosure.

I was mostly joking about wearing it everywhere. People would think I was weird and we can't have that. I saw a video from one of the links you posted of some kid, looked like a teenager, was demonstrating it. His head was not inside the body sock, it can be worn either way. |

I think that using a body sock in a school meltdown situation could work, if it were approached this way: First let the child get acquainted with it in a calm situation. Depending upon their level of understanding, explain would you would like to use it for. Allow them to experiment with it, like try it on and see how it feels to them. Ask them if its a nice feeling or are they repulsed by it? If they don't seem to mind it, wait until a meltdown occurs, (at home) and then try it. If all goes well, explain that you'd like to give it to the school, and allow them to use it when things are out of control. Step by step like this, maybe the introduction of the body sock in the middle of a meltdown would not be just one more sensory nightmare, but a familiar sensation that would actually be welcome. Just my take on it  After all I do this with my cat and her pet carrier for when she goes to the vet. Would anyone agree?
