Anyone see the movie Pan's Labyrinth? It was really excellent, magical, and intense. Some scenes were pretty graphic. It's one of the best films I've seen. I really liked the faun character as seen in my avatar.

Pros: I liked the acting, locations, set design, pace, character development, story, nearly everything.
Cons: I disliked the excessive level of violence; especially the fact that the real-world violence paralleled the fairytale world violence. Also, I was a little dissappointed when the Faun explained to the little girl the meaning of the totem depicting the girl, baby, and the Faun; I thought the scene went beyond foreshadowing and revealed too much of what was to come.

I won't add it to my movie collection because of the violence but all the same, I would recommend it to those who have a strong stomach.

I haven't seen that movie yet, but it looks really good, and I'm planning on going to see it as soon as possible.

"Excessive violence"? Was it really too much? Or just enough?

Personally I thought it was necessary for what the story was trying to convey, I mean the little girl was escaping into a fantasy world for a good reason, she did it to get away from a father so cruel & evil...and a reality so intense that her fantastic imagination had to be just as wild. That's also why I think her escapist creations were also a little bit dark compared to normal fairy tales.

Imho it was a masterpiece.

The director also made a similar movie called "The Devil's Backbone" you guys should check out. It has the same setting but isn't as graphic I would say. I can't believe the guy also made Hellboy and Blade II...although Hellboy was pretty visually stimulating, no?

Right now I am hosting a GdT film festival at my house we're right in the middle of "Hellboy."

I wonder who GdT is going to cast as the new Tarzan?

I liked it but I didn't think of it as a masterpiece. It grossed me out without giving me genuine overwhelmed terror. It made me sad but didn't manage to make me cry. I loved the Pale Man scene, and the fantasy in general, but by the end I felt disappointed. I'd been reading reviews of it at places like Ain't It Cool News that were just 100% praise praise praise, nobody calling it anything but a masterpiece, and I wasn't feeling it. Like I said, I liked it, but I think it's very overrated.

Sorry to disagree with you Veresae, but I loved it!

I just saw it today, and I can't truly express how satisfying is the movie!
It almost made me cry, and I rarely if ever cry when seeing a movie. So
powerful, so hard, and as Remescen said, the violence was just the level
needed in this movie. I loved the happy ending, but at the same time I
felt so bad for Ofelia, the little girl Sad and happy for her Smile

I MUST see it again! Tomorrow it will be! I fell in love with this movie!

I am not ashamed to say, this movie had me in tears, I don't normally cry over movies, excellent movie but not good for younger kids.

It was a really good movie.

Also, while others have mentioned the plot, I liked some of the visual effects as well (Doug Jones as the faun and the pale man - I like it when del Toro goes for practical effects over CGI).

Yes, I saw it when it was out in the theater. Absolutely brilliant.

I really liked the movie. I did find the ending a bit scripted, though. [SPOILER] I know the main antagonist is supposed to be really cruel and horrible and all, but it still seemed to me a stretch that he'd kill the girl. It's one thing to be cruel in the name of war, another for the sake of being an all-around as*hole.

Also, a question for computer game players... did the guy with eyes in his hands remind anyone else of the head crab zombies in Half Life 2?

Nice film, but it was dark indeed. I liked the way reality and fantasy were woven into each other.

I liked the movie but I didn't love the movie. For me the visuals made me like the movie more so than the plot. It was very beautiful to watch and I loved the costumes. It kind of reminded me of Wild Sargasso Sea in the way that a movie in foreign place kind of has that built in haunting effect to it.
I enjoyed also that the movie took place in a different historical era. I felt that was very important. I liked the idea that they went there in the end and actually killed the girl. Movies don't like to kill off main characters especially children. Kind of reminded me of that Buffy episode though where Buffy ends up sacrificing herself for her sister. But timeless themes turn into classic movies so they say. The movie was definitly memorable and the violence of her fantasy was very symbolic to the violence of times that the main character lived in. Why is everyone so afraid of violence? We live in a world where over 200 wars occur on any given day and parents are more concerned about the fantasy violence in their children's movies and video games. Rolling Eyes

I know it inspired Bjork's last album, which had some incredible songs on it
