In the last several weeks, I have been given a new medication which has a great benefit for my Aspergers and Bipolar disorder. This is part of a study to test the benefits of Memanine. Even though Memanine is a drug for Alzheimers Disease so far it has had great benefits for me. It has improved my memory and also has treated some of the Aspergers and Bipolar symptoms. This is my second week in the study and so far I have felt absolutely fantastic. There has not been any side effects but I feel absolutely great.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memantine (I guess the spelling you ment)

Also if its a study there is a 50% chance your on a placebo?

Tells more about the effects. Do you feel more social?

It is not the placebo. I feel much more calmer and my memory is more sharper than it was in the past. I have been going out more than usual. A lot of people have said that I have been a little different and not my same prickly personality. Thanks for the correction on the spelling.

Is the study for those with AS and Bipolar? If not, y are u in the study? In what ways has it helped your Bipolar - are you having less mood swings?

Sorry for all the questions, but I also have AS and Bipolar, so this has particular interest to me.

Yeah I never heard of this compound till you mentioned it.

It list three modes of action. One mode is

antagonist at glutamatergic NMDA receptors. The drug
Dextromethorphan (used in OTC cough meds) has a similar action.
I wonder by chance have you used large amounts of dextromethorphin
in the past? I know at least 2 members on WP that have/do and I know its
very common with young people in general.

I take medication for my temper, but it doesn't help with my AS.

Yes and includes the memory loss, or "fog" bipolar people have. The drug has a calming effect. I feel "level" and not swinging from depression to mania. They were very interested in my Biopolar history during the questioning period.

I really do not know if I have taken dexomethorpin in large amounts, but I can tell you that I feel great.

This calms you down. I noticed the difference 24 hours after taking the drug.

You said it focused your mind. Do you feel you have inattentive
ADHD and hence the drug is treating that?

Its seems to be treating a lot of different things in addition to the memory. But I feel "extra" focused like a laser beam.

I know that when i am slightly manic i think too fast (rapid thoughts) and when i am depressed it's hard to think at all (sometimes i have mania and depression at the same time too). Does the extra focus help during these times?

Most Definitely. My mind does not wander or lose focus.

Rev Bras Psiquiatr. 2006 Sep;28(3):252-4.
Links
Memantine may acutely improve cognition and have a mood stabilizing effect in treatment-resistant bipolar disorder.
Teng CT, Demetrio FN.

PMID: 17063225 [PubMed - in process]

No abstract but its being tested for non- Alzheimer's uses.
