So what is everyone doing (presuming you're single) to handle the holidays?

Personally I'm avoiding spending time with the family (they've driven me up a wall as of late which is weird because I see them maybe once a month) so it's "me" time. That means sitting at home, watching NetFlix (Supernatural right now), catching up on my WSJ reading, and tomorrow I'm going to go snow-boarding.

How about you? What works, and what doesn't?

I'm married, but my husband is deployed, so it's a rough holiday this year. I drove out to my mothers so that my daughter and I can spend it out here with her and my grandmother. In a couple of weeks, we'll drive back home (it's a 2-3 day drive-- yikes!) and get settled back in. But to stay positive while I'm here, I'm spending time with my Mom, letting them take my daughter off of my hands for a bit so that I can do sanity-preserving things like watching Doctor Who and reading good books. I'm also trying to go out and be a little social so that I don't feel quite so isolated-- things like hitting up the local brewery, going to movies, etc. It keeps me from getting stagnant and depressed. What doesn't work for me is sitting by myself and dwelling on being alone all day.

I am sitting alone and being alone the entire holiday, but I don't mind. I've gotten used to it over the years. Hell, I spend entire days and weeks without talking to anyone, what's a few days of Christmas? I know some people are bothered my it and express their painful loneliness on WP. I wish I could cheer them up. I am in the same boat, though so I wish myself and others lots of luck.

Doing the same for New Year, BTW...

I'm spending time with my Mom and sister, plus my aunts Velvet & Vickie might be showing up. My grandma passed away a few months ago, and this season's really driving it home.

I hate this time of year as a rule (mostly because of the lack of daylight hours), and I despise the over-the-top holiday celebrations. Add on top that this is my first Xmas without my fiance, and it's a complete nightmare.

I was supposed to spend 4 days with my fiance's family (they are much closer geographically than mine), but I woke up sick the day I was supposed to leave, so I canceled the trip.

All of which means I'm home, alone. But, honestly, I think that's what I prefer. So, a day of reading and scouring the TV for something watchable - hey, maybe there will be a Mythbusters marathon!

I have Netflix, but my ISP won't accommodate streaming, and the disc I have at the moment is not that great. I've started it twice and fallen asleep. Maybe I'll tray again earlier in the day today. :)

Anyway, hope some of you are having a wonderful holiday season!

Working a bunch of double shifts. Overtime + holiday pay = happy bank account.
