Adults can't play non-violent games? Really?

So I got to thinking... Sometimes it seems like everyone thinks adults can only play M-rated games. If your 20 or older, and you play anything else, people might say your "childish"
I've seen a lot of adults who are extremely immature. They generally only play M-rated games, or wrestling games. But they don't play for example, Lego games, Mario Bros, or even classic Spyro or Crash bandicoot. So it seems if you play a lot of a Lego game, your childish, but if you play a lot of super-violent and bloody games full of foul language, somehow that makes you a mature adult.

I think, Really? I have nothing against violent games, I've played plenty of them, but I still like my Lego's and other more casual games. I'll play just about an game. even if it's not M-rated and super violent.
I mean, sure. I play Grand Theft Auto, dead rising, Saint's Row, Kill Zone, the list goes on, but I also play all the Lego games, and I've played Spyro, Crash, Mario, and other games like that. I don't see a problem with that. Anyone agree?

Well I don't see anything wrong with playing not violent videogames or games that ar targeted at mature audiences. I play Mario, Little Big Planet. Besides that, there are also lots of games that aren't violent and provide great entertainment for all ages such as minecraft or gran turismo.

tell me about it. I'm so sick of the stigma that adults who play non-violent games are childish and that all games rated E or even T are no good, and also the myth that I'm not a true female gamer unless I play M-rated video games, which I rarely, if ever, do. It's also hilarious how people can say that E-rated games are for babies without any irony, when they sound like whining, screeching infants themselves.

A friend and I were having a similar discussion recently, which resulted from my suggestion that he play Minecraft.

"Minecraft? At our age?"

I suggested that he use his kids as an excuse for buying it, and that I would keep his dirty secret.

With me, genre is important. If Spyro and Mario featured as the protagonists in FPS games, I would be more familiar with these characters.

The notion that adults will only play so-called "mature" games is ludicrous. I'm 33 years old, and one of the last games I finished was "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", a few months ago. I currently have a Super NES, N64, Genesis, and Wii, plus 3 NES systems that I'm in the process of repairing. I like both "Street Fighter" and the earlier "Mortal Kombat" games, but I also love the "Zelda" series, Tetris, and Mega Man. If such tastes in gaming make me a child in others' eyes, so be it.

Children try to "grow up" faster.
Their most common attempts involve "appearances."
Appearing to "look/act" more grown up.

Judgements like this come from people in this stage, meaning: "Children" worry about looking childish.
Once a person understands that they're a grown-up (a very sad thing when you think about it), "childishness" worries usually falls well below the radar of concern.

A bit like accusing a fat person of anorexia, or accusing a tall person of being a munchkin, not likely to hit much of a nerve.

So understand that accusations of "childishness" are usually only going to come from "children".

It's odd how subjective videogames are. People say it is so childish to play games if you are over 25. If you're an adult and play e-rated games, oh make a fuss about it. If you are a little kid and you play Call of Duty or Halo then oh, make a fuss about it. It's weird how they don't follow any "age appropriate" rules and go both ways, when I see 40 year old guys playing Pokémon on the ds and my 10 year old cousin playing Grand Theft Auto on Xbox, it works so strange. I wish we could all play together, freely, whatever we want and get along well, but I suppose we need to use videogames as another way humans can judge others.

I find things like this to be too ridiculous to take seriously. I agree with everyone on here discussing the irony of people who target people just because they want to enjoy playing a videogame that is rated E. The nerve of some people...

One of the markers of true adulthood is when you stop caring whether someone thinks what you do is "childish". I'm 50 years old, and I play an MMO where I'm a superhero, and another where I captain a starship. On my console, I play Mass Effect and Minecraft. And I can be occasionally found on the floor with my son, playing with Hot Wheels cars. Because I don't give a moist crap what anyone thinks is "age-appropriate" for me - they're not the ones playing, I am.

People who use those terms aren't adults. Maybe they are, in age, but they're probably mostly closer to the minimum age required to play M rated games, meaning, the 17-20 range. I've learned though, that age alone doesn't make someone an adult. Besides, OP, you'll eventually come to learn just how little the opinions of others matter. As long as you enjoy certain games, it doesn't matter if other people do. It's not unusual for adults to favor M rated games, and some may not find most E rated titles appealing, but most won't presume to tell others what they should or shouldn't enjoy. As an adult myself, I enjoy all kinds of games, but to each their own. Also, RoFL at that pic about audiences.

I never heard of the existence of this prejudice before? Around here, grown up people that still play much video games, are in general seen as a bit inmature or geeky, but it does not really make a difference if you play Zelda or Call of Duty. ^^

i almost exclusively play E rated games.

In my experience, all video games are tarred with the same brush of "childishness". Children play "M-rated" games and adults play Super Mario... My friend and her young children came to visit. I figured I would give her some recreation time by putting on some games for the kids. The little boy hated all my E-rated stuff; he wanted to know why I turned off "Spec Ops: The Line" when they appeared on the scene...He had no time for Okami and became visibly angry when I tried to get him to play Megaman.

I play almost every type of game ( though I rarely play sports games unless they're from Nintendo, and very few racing & casual games )...over the past couple months my gaming time has been split between LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, Super Mario 3D World, The Legend Of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Animal Crossing: New Leaf ( every day part of my routine ), Lightning Returns, Diablo III and DMC, which covers E, T & M ratings. Hell, I'm about to turn 33 and plan on picking up Mario Kart 8 a few weeks later...anybody who thinks I should be buying COD or GTAV instead needs to grow up.

I've been a hardcore Nintendo fan since I was 5 ( when the NES first launched ), and though I've gotten into more violent games in recent years most of my all-time favorite games are rated E or T ( or not rated at all... ). While I do love playing Doom, Saints Row, GTA, Borderlands, Eternal Darkness, Fallout 3 and Lollipop Chainsaw I'm much happier playing Animal Crossing, Chibi-Robo!, EarthBound, Skylanders, Metal Gear Solid ( no kill runs ) SSX, Harvest Moon and Rock Band 3
