Sometimes music starts playing in my head. Quietly at first and then I become aware of it and by focusing on it can hear it more clearly. Often it's classical and so beautiful. The song will play in my mind and to its conclusion and end. And I can't start it up again - it's almost like I can hear it being played somewhere in the distance, but I know it's in my mind. I've had this happen since I was a child. Is this common?

I can't say that I've ever experienced that.

Just curious: are the music pieces you hear known works, or original compositions?

I'm not sure. I'm not that familiar with classical music, but they could be pieces I've heard before and am subconsciously remembering. But I couldn't bring them to mind if I tried or identify them.
It's like music is being played in the background of my mind and if I listen to it, it gets louder.

Especially classical music. Techno and jazz music have been more active for me though.

I've heard but can't confirm that some composers are like you and their musical training gives them the skills to write out what they hear in their mind.
Would you consider musical training?????

I get the same experience when hearing music that I really love and that's gets me cheered up. The irony is that it's mixed of either classical, psychedelic, or rock music. I'm a guitarists and that kinds of mentality really helps when learning new music or getting ideas for a new song. I thought I was the only in the world with music playing inside my head, but so happy that I found one. :)

I'm not to happy when I get a song stuck in my head that I don't like.

I used to wake up thinking my alarm clock went off, but of course it wasn;t cuz the radio doesn;t play Marilyn Manson, so yeah, there was a period of time I heard Manson in my head, and the more I relaxed and pretended to be asleep still the louder and clearer it would become.

I hear music in my head as well, there's always a song playing. I noticed when I was little that behind the thoughts was always some song playing. Nowadays it's mostly psychedelic trance or, in periods, classical music. I have a symphony that plays in my head over and over, it has different themes and contains a range of instruments. I don't expect to ever be able to write it so sometimes it makes me sad, but I still love it.

The phenomenon seems to be pretty common amongst musicians.
