Avast!, even the free version, is currently the best, and its boot time scan gets out crap those other two can't even touch.
You might want to get a free firewall along with it, but its really great & keeping your (crappy, insecure) Windows box safe.
...or you could just delete the Windows virus infecting your machine, install Linux, and stop worry about that crap.

Most modern anti-virus programs use heuristics, and they're never really failsafe. The heuristics sensitivity can be adjusted in Avast. It's never given me any false positives on anything I've programmed, although I mostly use high level languages when programming in Windows.
^This! I have programmed for a living and use a wide range of software some of it obscure due to the market share, cost, etc. Once I have set Avast as described above, it works fine. I have yet to get a false positive! And of ALL the packages I have tried, it seems to offer the lowest hit on performance unlike Norton and others. I now use the paid version on ALL my systems and Android platforms. They have a free one which is nearly just as good. It all boils down to preference I suppose but Norton would be the LAST I would ever consider! In all the years I have had Avast I have only ever gotten one infection, a trojan. And it was my fault as I had disabled Avast on something I was programming and it was mucking with the ports. Dumb me forgot to re-enable it afterwards and boom! That fast online and I was infected...
