"Mope rock" isn't really so much a genre as a label for well, mopey, depressing, angsty rock music. It can be anything from grunge, to nu-metal, to even pop-punk. Post Nirvana, KoRn, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Alanis Morissette, Alice In Chains, Deftones, or whatever else you think fits the bill. As long as it's from the 90s, negative in tone, and some type of rock or related genre, it's good. :P

I'll start with some of my favorites:

(a bit of NSFW language on this one)

My rules aren't really strict though. I'll make exceptions for things like 2000s-era Linkin Park and 80s-era Depeche Mode, as I find them to be sufficiently mopey. Plus, Linkin Park would have fit right in if they existed in the 90s, and a lot of 90s bands cite Depeche Mode as an influence.

Not sure this qualifies, but I think it's at least half mope... and half manic episode ("I want to be as big as mountain, I want to fly as high as the sun").

Ugh, fergodssake I can't figure out how to embed the video, so here's the link:

Basically, you type

Like so,

Anyway, I love how cynical, and utterly true this song is: (warning a couple of f-bombs)

I wouldn't call Deftones mope rock, most their music lacks any angst, though their 90's material might have been angstier as I'm most familiar with their White Pony onwards stuff.

I think NIN wins the angst contest.

Though despite their angst they might not be mopey enough.

Does it need to be strictly 90's, because I want to post some Linkin Park.

Listen to Deftones' first two albums (Adrenaline and Around the Fur) some time, and you'll see what I mean. It isn't quite straight "mopiness", but it's definitely angsty, and that works for this thread.

I tried to keep it focused on 90s music as I felt that that was *the* decade of angst/mope rock, though I guess I'll allow some 80s and 2000s stuff as well.

Speaking of which, this is quite possibly one of the most depressing songs I've ever heard:

It's not from the 90s, and "rock" is stretching it as it's really more like synthpop with some industrial elements, but it fits the tone. Great song nonetheless, has a very existential theme to it.

Well, you can't get more miserable than a song called, Sour Times. Haven't listened to Portishead in years. Your thread made me think of them. I'll have to get this album out and give it a listen.

A bit of miserable Radiohead - Just. And a rather Kafka-esque video to boot.

Sorry if I'm going off in the wrong direction, but this was the sort of angsty I was in the 90s

Disappointment by The Cranberries. When I first heard Alanis Morissette I thought she was Dolores O'Riordan branching out into a solo career. I've just realized this album is 20 years old! How did that happen?!?

I almost forgot about stiltskin. I saw them live in a little bar a few years ago and got my photo taken with Ray Wislon. I was too shy to have much of a conversation with him. He was really nice.

Victory at Sea - Old Plans, just makes it into the 90s with this album from 99, but my favorite VaS album in The Good Night released in 2002. This track is a very enjoyable bit of dark grubby, post rock.
