I've noticed that there are a good number of relatively common art styles fans like to use when rendering their favorite fictional characters:

-Animesque (The art is inspired by the visual trappings of Japanese animation.)
-Disneyesque (Characters look like they came straight out of a Disney animated film.)
-Timm style (You'll think of Bruce Timm's DCAU when you see this style.)
-Realistic (This should be self-evident.)

There are also a few faux-retro styles, or throwbacks to art styles from earlier time periods:

-8-bit/16-bit sprites or pixels (It looks like everything came from an old video game.)
-ASCII art (Letters, numbers, and other computer keyboard symbols are arranged to form objects; they're like emoticons, but more complex.)
-ANSI art (Also called "high ASCII art", this style utilizes the arrangements of tiny squares in a way that's similar to, but noticeably different from, 8-bit/16-bit style)

What other common fan art styles can you name or describe?

There is always the written word -- Fanfics, and... Slash

Stick Figure -- Think Order of the Stick or Cyanide & Happiness

Cosplay

Fan-made movies -- This is big in Star Wars.

-Chibi style (It's super deformed and usually animesque.)
-American comic book style (Your favorite characters now look like they belong in a comic from DC or Marvel.)

How could I forget about the style of early classic American cartoons?

I've got an idea! We all can make separate threads for each of these fan art styles, and ask others to post links to examples of these styles. Be careful not to make too many of these threads at once; it might look like you're spamming the site.

8-bit/16-bit Sprites/Pixels (Fan) Art
ANSI (Fan) Art
ASCII Art

Let's see...
Puni Plush - It's sort of like chibi, only not as deformed.
Thick-Line Animation - It's the style of the typical modern U. S. cartoon.

there is a girl i know, in some of my classes who i believe is on the spectrum, that spends the entire day absorbed in her wonderful sketchbook drawing created characters (mostly these expression-filled characters), scenes and vehicles in a distinct disney-esque + some gravity falls style. perfect for animation.

she is amazingly talented, i particularly liked her drawing of a beetle. her use of color far surpasses mine.
