Pew research just released a *massive* new survey (N=10,013, margin of error is +/- 2 percent) on the political attitudes in the US with its updated Political Typology.

Rather than recycling the hurr durr derp conservative/liberal dichotomy, Pew has classified individuals into 7 different categories based on the consistency of their political attitudes:

  • Steadfast Conservatives
  • Business Conservatives
  • Young Outsiders
  • Hard-Pressed Skeptics
  • Next Generation Left
  • Faith and Family Left
  • Solid Liberals
Here is the overall picture, showing how the categories align in their Congressional/Presidential preferences:

However, the most interesting results are probably those that diverge from what one would expect from their party preference. Here are a few (major contemporary issues):

Immigration

Image

Here, Business Conservatives seem to have a stance on immigration most similar to the US left, while Hard-Pressed Skeptics and Steadfast Conservatives seem to hold quite similar negative attitudes towards immigration.

Religion

Surprisingly, the group most likely to consider a belief in god necessary for morality is found among among the Faith and Family Left, and not Steadfast Conservatives.

Homosexuality

Once again Business Conservatives stand out, expressing similar or higher acceptance of homosexuality than some Democrat-leaning individuals.

Social Security

Here the real issue is the broad consensus among US citizens not to cut Social Security programmes. Only Business Conservatives have a majority in favour of cuts, and it is tiny.

There are numerous other figures which could be interesting, but this post is already long as it is. For more details, the 4th link below provides a link to an interactive comparison of all typologies on the full range of survey questions (with questions as diverse as the views on Islam, constitutional originalism, data surveillance, Obamacare etc.).

Please discuss.

I'm a hard-pressed skeptic.
I figured I would be, just reading the list of possibilities.

edit: I want to note that I am not against gay people, not do I think a person has to believe in God to be moral. In these areas I differ from the majority of people in my category.

My results:

"Your best fit is...
Business Conservative
along with 10% of the public.

Business Conservatives generally are traditional small-government Republicans. Overwhelming percentages think that government is almost always wasteful and it does too much better left to businesses and individuals. Business Conservatives differ from Steadfast Conservatives in their positive attitudes toward business and in their strong support for Wall Street in particular. Most think that immigrants strengthen the country and take a positive view of U.S. global involvement. As a group, they are less socially conservative than Steadfast Conservatives."
