I've just started college. I didn't have any friends at first and was pretty much nonverbal most of the time, but now I have a whole bunch of acquaintances (maybe someday friends?) because I would watch people meet new people and I copied what they would say and how their tone of voice went. Anyways, I now slip into my persona so easily I doubt anyone could ever tell I'm autistic. When I talk to my professors, you can definitely tell I'm autistic, but with the whole meeting new people my age thing I've gotten really good at! I'm just wondering how good everyone else is at mimicking? And are you a 'professional' in some situations?

You've described how I managed to survive throughout education. I longed to be alone, but that's just not possible when at school, college or university. The only way to 'fit in' is mimicking.

Oh yes - I call them suits (the personas I wear for various occasions).

- I have a suit for work
- A suit for NT style social functions
- A suit for being out in the general public
- A suit for the in-laws (more like body armour)

It's important to remember to relax, take the damn suit off, and just let it all hang out when at home or with close friends.

:D

I started copying questions when I was younger after a friend said that I hardly ever asked how she was doing. So I started simply returning questions, until the pattern got clear. Now it comes natural in most situations.
