Weird question about Nightmare On Elm Street

When I was a kid (not sure exact date but circa 5th grade) I was talking with some other kid about Nightmare on elm street (I hadn't seen it then) and I asked him why Freddy was all burned like that and he said it was because Freddy was a wizard and people burned him at the stake. Now if you have seen the movies you know this isn't true so why did he give me such strange false information? Have always wondered about this.

He almost got it right.

Freddie was a murderer who was let off on a technicality. The parents of his victims hunted him down and burned him alive. He swore revenge and appeared in people's nightmares to murder them in their dreams.

That and it was revealed he got his powers from a trio of Dream Demons.

I suspect it was because your friend had not actually seen the movie, and was only guessing.
