Pew Research just released a study on how the views on parenting differ by political orientation (N=3,243, margin of error in full sample is +/- 2.3 percent):

And here is another look. The top 5 values by ideological group:

Furthermore, I decided to take a closer look at the study, and found something that some might find interesting:

I have added boxes to single out the highest and lowest score for each column (a tie for the "Important, Not most important" column).

Some bullet points:

  • The largest polarization appears to be on the value of Religious Faith, followed by Tolerance and Obedience.
  • Conversely, there appears to be almost complete agreement across ideological groups on the value of Being Responsible. It is the highest scoring value among all ideological groups.
  • The difference between Consistent Liberals and "everyone else" is much more pronounced than the differences within "everyone else" on the issues of Obedience and Curiosity.
  • Religious faith is actually considered the least important value if one looks at its net importance (53 percent). And while Curiosity scores last in the Most Important category (8 percent), its net importance surpasses Religious Faith at 59 percent.

Anyway, as I was completely unimpressed by the shallow and irrelevant options chosen by Pew, I have prepared my own poll with more relevant teachings to the coming generations.

Please discuss.

Think of the children, succulently fattened.Fresh from the oven, browned to perfection.Seasoned with sea salt, fresh ground pepper and rosemary.I suggest a crisp white wine to pair with the meal.

I'm disappointed to find that I've cast the only vote for "Han shot first" thus far.

For shame, PPR. For shame.

'Think for yourself' would top my personal list.

Han shot first, damn it! I remember him shooting Greedo under the table when I was a kid, and George Lucas can't possibly change my memory of what happened no matter how much he revises the original!
Point being, the truth is the truth, even if we don't like it. I'd like to instill that in my daughter.
That, and tolerance and creativity.
