I know next to nothing about automobiles, but I'll probably need one in the near future.
I know I can cut down on adding miles to them (old vehicles), and eventually will swap out engine or transmissions or whatever.
I don't know if you get the same area results I do on there so basically
2010 Honda Insight $5350 57000 miles
04 Civic Hybrid $7000 113k miles
03 C H 6k$ 110k miles
02 Prius Base 5900$ 121k miles
03 P Base 3k$ 163k miles
06 Base 5975$ 190k miles
05 Accord Hybrid 4750 $ 199k miles

Thoughts?

Is there an automotive board here?

Anyway, posting a model and price won't really tell you whether or not the car in question is a good deal. There are a number of factors that can vary from car to car.

For example, has the car been wrecked? If so it could have a bent frame.

Has the engine ever been run with too little oil? If so, the car isn't worth what is being asked no matter how little they ask.

Has the car ever been involved in a flood? It's not unusual for people to put the cars on the market away from the flood without telling anyone that they had been flooded.

My advice is to anyone who isn't a good mechanic is to find a good mechanic to go over the car before you buy it. If you don't, you are probably going to pay too much. Years ago, I had a roommate who knew nothing about cars looking to buy his first car. I suggested he find a mechanic to check it out. It turned out that instead he had a friend of his who knew nothing about cars other than how to drive one take a look at it and he pronounced it in good shape. Within a couple of months, my roommate had to spend about as much money repairing serious problems on the car as what he paid for it.

unless the car has been horribly abused you shouldn't need to worry about needing a new engine or transmission. (those are multi-thousands of $ to replace) things that will need repaired/replaced on most used cars are things like brakes, shocks, tires, AC refresh. you will definitely want to do a tune-up, replace oil and coolant. you will want to have $1500 or so beyond the purchase price available, just as contingency for those things that MAY need to be done - if you don't need to spend it, then you got a good deal indeed.
