The only thing this survey shows me is that they selected the least intelligent Americans they could find for this survey.

Liberals?

On the other hand, the sample size was only 100 people for one part and 50 for the other, and the test used "warmth" as a proxy for "trustworthy", so I'm not sure how valuable this thing is to anyone, really.

From the artcle:

Quote:
More than 100 adult volunteers were asked in an online survey to rate 42 professions by their perceived warmth (a mixture of friendliness, trustworthiness and good intentions) and competence.

"Warmth"?? From people that I don't know (and several that I do know) "warmth" is at least initially seen as a ruse of some kind and often is. I don't think I even have a "warmth" setting.

Quote:
Fiske and Dupree found that the biggest risk factor for public distrust of scientists was the perception that the main motivation of these researchers is gaining grant funding.
I can empathise with their skepticism here.

Quote:
"People are not idiots," Fiske said in a statement. "The public's issue with science is not necessarily ignorance."
Imagine that.

After the initial warm up, the article shamelessly dives right into the message they are really trying to push: "Climate change".

What are your evidences? So far the data show that the opposite is happening.

Well...scientists say that the earth is more than 6000 years old, and that the Earth goes around the Sun. So how can you trust them?

Next they'll have us believe that the Earth is not flat, and that there is something wrong with smoking cigarettes!

I was happy to accept the Earth going around the sun, but I think they went too far when they asked us to accept that North America exists.

Actually I recently heard a scientist somewhere complain that Americans will ask him if "kangaroos really exist"!

In the case of doctors promoting cigarettes - that had been at one time, but no legitimate physician is going to today with everything we know about health hazards associated with smoking.
Those other examples are the ravings of insane idiots who have absolutely no peer support.
Science still wins.

Let's see: were any of those published through a reputable journal and did any of them undergo a rigorous peer review process? It's not the fault of the legitimate scientist that people who consume such material don't know how to distinguish between critical and mediocre material. And it's not as if they haven't been pointing this out for some time now. I mean really: "publish bigfoot genome in brand new journal they themselves founded". That's one strong indictment against scientists because we all know that they just come up with new journals on the spot and publish it themselves without submitting their work to peer review

Not to mention that one of the main reasons for the peer review process is that the experts participating in the review will not necessarily all have the same opinion, ergo their primary concern is the quality of research methodology and not so much the conclusions themselves.

Wow, you're actually not wrong for once...

There is a HUGE problem with grant funding these days, and the fact that there's NO MONEY in doing peer reviews or actually checking research. Good science/research doesn't happen without rigorous peer review.
