Compass and Straight Edge can only construct Fields of degree 2^n over the rationals. That is why the general angle cannot be trisected using Compass and Straight Edge rules. This would enable the the solution of an irreducible polynomial of degree three over the rationals or reals. Three is not a power of 2.

Similarly the cube cannot be doubled in volume using these rules. This would involve finding the cube root of twice the given volume.
