Okay I'm not sure if I am understanding you correctly, but it seems you are saying Aspergers is merely PTSD. If that is what you are saying, then I have to disagree with you.
Now a lot of Aspies eventually get PTSD. But it is more a symptom of repeated abuse of one kind or another and perhaps Aspies generally are more sensitive to abuse and it affects them even worse than it does an NT. But Aspergers is not PTSD and we do not necessarily grow up with PTSD. It is something acquired from some sort of bad experience and not all Aspies have it. _________________ I'm sweet on the outside and rotten within... |

I'd really rather not go into my views on it, but I think you bring up a valid point. I may have been more then a little bit briefer, then I wanted to be.
No, I'm saying AS is real. It was there first. _________________ Advisory: The hero shoots a lot of people and doesn’t think much about it.

I've had many doctors piss me off by trying to tell me that I don't have Asperger's, only PTSD and Social Anxiety. I have never in my life been anxious about socialization. I merely approach a willing ear, and talk until it falls off, LOL. Socially inept, maybe. So my argument was, how does PTSD make you misread social cues? It doesn't! How does PTSD make your intelligence lop-sided? It doesn't. But you raise a good point, Postpaolo. _________________ "Always Drink Upstream From the Herd." |

great. . I have been reading the Bully Site for HOURS and now I am late for bed and tomorrow is a school day!
I thought you meant we were AS already and then we developed PTSD bit it wasn't just one big thing that happened to get us all PTSDed it was thousands of little things over and over that finally creeped out our senses and got us all COMPLEX PTSDed. . . so it is sorta like a vanilla milkshake with chocolate syrup. . all blended in there with the Aspie-ness.
yeah, I can self diagnose this one a mile a way. . .

I was born with AS. Did I grow up as an AS person? No. I grew up as a ComplexPTSD person, with AS.
(this is just me trying to word this a little better. Still not trying to state my point of view.) _________________ Advisory: The hero shoots a lot of people and doesn’t think much about it.

Yes. People have suggested to me before that I have many of the symptoms of PTSD, and yes, if I do have PTSD, it is almost certainly a result of growing up with Asperger's syndrome.
I have severe flashbacks- something happens that makes me remember some awful episode of bullying or disastrous social ineptitude, and I'll sit or stand somewhere staring into space and stimming frantically for an hour while the scene replays itself over and over again in my head. I have rage issues. I have clinically significant memory loss. I am depressed. I do not sleep well. I have had long periods of time in my life when I engaged in seriously risky and self-destructive behaviour. I sometimes have episodes of depersonalization.
So... yes. I think many of us probably do grow up with complex PTSD, and it probably causes us as many problems as the autistic spectrum disorder does. |

Well I think "Complex" is definitely a good description and I'm sure PTSD happens to many aspies as well. I think that our combination of advantages and disadvantages when compared with NTs could cause our minds and personalities to evolve into something way different from the average NT mind as we grow up.
Personally, I don't think my AS is becoming simply "better or worse" with age, rather I feel better at both being myself as well as maintaining a vague and misleading persona. Combine that with the defense mechanism of seeing NTs as slightly more primitive creatures and I'm scared to think what I'm growing up into. Maybe all this is driven by repressesd memories of bullying which could make it PTSD after all. _________________ "Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur" - Petronius |

I do thing AS can increase your chances of developing PTSD...or some sort of immune dysfunction (CFS etc.), digestive problems....later on in life.
Since we find alot of things stressful that most people don't on a day to day basis...and sometimes we can't deal well with the stress and meltdown...
I don't know. Something has to break down eventually I guess? _________________ *Normal* is just a setting on the dryer. |

| I don't understand. If someone has AS, then they will always have AS. You don't grow out of it. |

It's like they used to call PTSD 'shell shock' in the first world war because they thought that someone needed some big BOOM to make you like that. . then, in ww 2 they called it 'battle fatigue' because it could accumulate but it still had to be horriendious stuff. Around Vietnam war time they started calling it Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome but later. . much later they found that it really doesn't take one big boom. . or a bunch of big booms. . it can be just the wearing away of one's self esteem by bullys and meanies and sexual attacks and non sexual attacks and nagging parents/ spouses/coworkers/. flashing lights, loud noises and music and odors and fabrics washed in harsh detergents.
stuff like that.

I've definitely been AS all my life. My mom tells me that kids didn't like me in preschool because I told them that they were doing it wrong when we were playing together. And then they didn't play with me anymore. So I just played with my blocks alone.
I've definitely accrued some extra diagnoses along the way, but they all stem from the AS.
As for growing up, I absolutely refuse. _________________ I don't do small talk. |
