i don't go there; but I live really close. Have either you or alex looked into future employment and effect of asperger's syndrome?
I have a very mild case of asperger's and I've been able to learn tricks to get along in NT world; however, I see it running very strongly through my relatives. none will take medicine for it; and I know they would benefit. here's why...they don't want their employment affected by the stigma of medicine. my concern, is that ADD/ADHD is covered under the ADA legislation for taking medicine. asperger's is not.....since you two are at the beginning of your career's, have either of you considered looking into affecting legistlation on this issue.
My question is off-topic and I would like to repost in a general forum; I don't know how. Please advise or have an administrator handle this?
Also, if any one else is reading this...please provide your thoughts also on this one. |

I'm in my second year at mason and Alex is a junior. I looking at being a teacher for asperger's and autism students or being a professor at mason's new century college.
Any disability is covered under the Amecians with Disabilities Act. Asperger's and Autism is under the mental retardation section pf employment though in truth isn't mental its neurological.
You also forget Sen. Clinton had a bill dealing with Autism and Asperger's going around. The Combating Autism Act is also in effect since the beginning of the year 2007.
Alex and me just want to honestly know if there any other WP members who go to GMU. We would like to them in person sometime.

thanks for info....it's all new to me. I'm sure there are more students at GMU; it's a matter of education, for those people that have asperger's and also of knowing this website it out there.
I'm in my 40's and I've only just figured out the problem.

I've never had problems getting a job (I work at a tv studio right now) and I do freelance work for $50/hour. I figure I'll always have that to fall back on. |

I have relatives that can't leave their home; they don't know how to communicate and so avoid it at all costs. They aren't afraid, they just gave up on the hassle.
One of my relatives works nights at a 24 hour restaurant; my concern? He's so smart and kind; but he refuses to take any medicine and he won't ever truly experience his fullest capabilities. I think that's a shame, becuase there are so many things he could do to help society.
But, there's a stigma associated with asperger's/PDD's. So, he won't even discuss the concept. I have a nephew that never leaves home, never even leaves his room. It is truly sad. So, because i see this from this perspective...I reallly wish this would be included in the ADA legislation. I think asperger's is on the rise becuase of our isolationist society with TV, videos, etc. I also think those kids that shoot in schools, they had a form of PDD's that impacted accpetance into their society.
oh well...it's my rant...thanks to all for reading. |

Interesting viewpoint. Do you really think more people are watching TV even though studies have shown that television viewership is actually decreasing across the board? And how exactly does video make our society isolationist when it is a form of communication? I'm curious to hear what you have to say. |

I have a hard problem with published statistics unless I see the demographics they are pulling from. I think our population is increasing and I think more people are depending upon computers and individual video games for their entertainment.
I do think our trend is to be isolated in our homes; and i think this has made our society more inclined to develop individuals with discrepencies in personalities. I consider myself a by-product of this type of discrepency; although it is characterized as a learning disability of which can be overcome. |

| I see where you're coming from. I don't think society is necessarily becoming more isolated due to new technologies such as the internet. I do think the internet is bringing us together in different ways which can have negative side effects. |

that's a really good point; my son loved video games and i never cared to have them play. HOwever, my husband said it was okay, becuase he normally played with other kids and they would talk a great deal while they were playing.
Communication and the internet are having a great deal of positive impact; I would never have heard of asperger's and not have understood where I was "screwing-up" when working with people. I just never got it; even today it gets very difficult because I have to fine tune and work those extra senses on understanding the "right" or normal reactions that other people do. NT"s do it as a second nature. I come home from work exhausted each day, but hoping I have learned more for it.
So, I don't know; a hope & a prayer that it will turn out okay for everyone. If I could afford to donate to this site; I would 10 times over. I don't want it to go away. |

I kinda of agree with you; although it's changed as I became older. I used to want to fit in, and I wanted to understand why people avoided me and were uncomfortable around me. Now, I think I've figured it out. So, now...I don't want to know and I don't care as much. I'm okay with it. I think that I want people to be more aspie-like. Why? Becuase aspie's truly are straightforward, they don't manipulate other people, they just go at it from their heart. With no ill-will.
I would sit and talk to an apie over an NT any day. They are odd. |

Well I already met another WP member at GMU but the three of us know there are more aspies and autistics on campus. Alex is trying from an Asperger's group on campus but I don't know the situation on the matter.
