Hmmm... 8O I'm freaked out!

Anyway, I can go on and on, but basically I've always known I'm not like other people, I suspect I'm an Aspie. In school, I was in Special Ed despite being Gifted, I actually emailed one of my old Special Ed teachers reciently, I was labeled "ED/Gifted" back in those days, basically throwing fits and loosing control because I didn't understand teasing, etc. I wasn't said to have Aspergers, but she said when I went to school they didn't really know about it, but based on what she knows now, she agrees with my suspicions and I should go to a psychologist and see. Also, the descriptions of the typical Aspie fit my personality so much... it's scary and is the reason why I had to comment here 8O

I saw this forum, because now I work at a place where I was told a co-worker was Autistic, but frankly, I think he's doesn't act like most people, but I personally act a bit more like him than other people! That's what got me interested. Also before reading these descriptions, I had a falling out with a roommate, and the things she said she didn't like about me pretty much fit the descriptions on this site, and how I know I act...

Long story short, I don't know if I really fit in, but I for sure know I'm very "nerdy", socially inept to the point it affects me negatively, horribly honest, etc... etc... it could go on forever.

Plus reading the posts here, I so understand them, it's not funny, and I think I could still give insight into many of these problems, even if it turns out I fall under a slightly different label or something, but what's a label anyway?

Heh, I think I see more people like me than any other site I've ever seen. Something had to be said :)

Hi,

I've learnt on my short stay on this site that being gifted, shy/introverted, socially awkward and directly honest are not enough to warrant the term of AS. Its more likely you are a gifted person and nothing more serious than that :) To be AS, according to those on this site, your symptoms would have to include, apparently, a lack of conscience and no emotional sensitivity. Those latter two do not go with gifted people, who are usually sensitive and caring too. So, just a warning that you are stepping into some very troubled waters here.

That is the sort of post I was actually waiting on and was actually what I was wondering most about, because I am very sensitive, mostly sensitive because I can't tell what others want, it's almost like a combo of ED/Gifted and Asperger's... :?

In fact looking at all the little lists and things, the lists overlap a lot. Taking one example, some sites claim Einstein was a classic Asperger case, others say a classic Gifted case. Now I know I'm not on the level of Einstein, but my old Special Ed teacher had to make the comment she still talks to people saying I'm the most intellegent person she ever met... though I don't know if that's true or if she's just saying that to make me fell better, see what I mean :? Anyway though, with scientific reasoning, it's safe to assume then in fact the symptoms of the two overlap widely, but probably do differ in that reguard. But I am sensitive, but sometimes not sensitive when I want to be sensitive. And when I was a child, I didn't understand the concept that people don't say what they mean at all, more like Aspergers...

I probably should have mentioned earlier why I was so confused. I was also thinking about posting on a Gifted forum for a while, to see how that fit :?

Yes, thank you for this Angnix. Your reply sent me on a research exercise. The more I read, the more I realise that the characteristics of the gifted do overlap with Aspergers in some areas, thus the confusion for me too. As far as I can tell, the primary difference is that the gifted are highly compassionate and sensitive, and according to some reasearch, over 93% fall into the INTP personality type.

I thought I had found a place to feel at home, but was astounded at the high degree of INTJ or ISTJ represented here. I think that a "J" and a "P" are fundamentally quite different. Whilst Aspergers and gifted share the introversion characteristic, I am beginning to think that the "P" is specific to gifted and rarely seen in Aspergers, or at least the Aspergers on this site, since that is the only reference I have.

Your apparent lack of sensitivity is probably more to do with feeling misunderstood as a child, rather than a lack of emotion or feelings in general.

Anyway, I appreciate your speaking up. It has explained, for me, the discrepancy between the initial feeling that I had found "home" and the despair when I realised I was as different here as I am in society in general. Of course diversity is important, but I wanted a place to interact with those like me for a while. I spend all my time out there in the world having to interact with diversity, and thought that I may find a haven of like-minded people for some much-needed relaxation.

My conclusion, as of today, is that "Aspie" is not a synonym for "gifted". Many of the self-diagnosed on this site are probably in the latter category, and had seen enough of themselves to suspect Aspergers.

Elaine Aron, Ph.D wrote a book called The Highly Sensitive Person. Many of the characteristics overlap with AS, with one obvious major difference. At a superficial glance, it would appear to me that Elaine is AS. But in retrospect, I can see now she is obviously not, and nor am I.

Having said all of this, the only way to find out is to experience it for yourself. I hope that your stay here is more comfortable than mine was :)

I have to agree with you on that. I can relate and almost fit, but I'm very sensitive and emotional, too emotional actually, my main problem, though I can't accurately predict the emotions under a person either... though I think I'm repeating what I said. I'll research this a bit more too, maybe I'm close, but not quite right, though is it possible to be a mix of both?

Heh, now I just have to read up on it more too, I probably should speak with an expert, though usually when I try to self-diagnose before seeing a doctor I'm usually right, so who knows

Oh, looking up those abbreviations, I felt the person writing the INTP article somehow looked inside my brain 8O , while those other two were sort of like me, but not everything was 100% on... Thanks for that!

Edit again: Weirdness! I took an online test, and I'm almost even on everything, though it actually said I was I (N or S, it couldn't figure that one out!) T J , but looking at the scores, barely... dead even when it comes between N or S, and almost dead-even on everything else, though I think the problem is that I couldn't decide the answers to most of those questions because I've been a bit both at one time or another or about equally, and I think I read an article somewhere that's a Gifted trait to 8O

One more edit: Ahh, now it's obvoius, I've pretty much provided evidence to support what I originally though, what's a label? Maybe I would prefer if I fell into a category, but in actuality the categories are not concrete.

That statement above probably more accurately sums up my personality more than anything else.

Long story short, I finally figured out I should ask other people that I suspect, cause they aren't going to lie to me, right?

...

After tons of discussion with these people, now I realize I can just look at a bunch of coins, and instantly know how many there are... I count to make sure.

But I now understand EVERYTHING that was strange in my life, so quickly I can't sort it out.

Edit: Don't worry about me, I'll eventually be okay. I understand now almost everyone I was around and liked me is like this... and this whole situation has them and me so worried I just want to help them feel better. I don't like the fact not only I but most of my friends have lost most of our brain function.
