Asperger's syndrome and borderline personality disorder are not especially similar disorders, but some aspies may have traits of a borderline personality anyway.
For each criterion of emotionally unstable personality disorder, decide how well it applies to you personally. If it doesn't apply at all, score it as 0; if it is somewhat applicable, score it as 1; and, if it describes you quite well, score it as a 2. The minimum possible score is 0; the maximum possible score is 20. For an ICD-10 diagnosis of F60.30 emotionally unstable personality disorder, impulsive type, three of the impulsive-type criteria must be met ("A marked tendency to quarrelsome behaviour and to conflict with others, especially when impulsive acts are thwarted or criticized," must be met). For an ICD-10 diagnosis of F60.31 emotionally unstable personality disorder, borderline type, any three impulsive-type criteria must be met; and, in addition, at least two borderline-type criteria must be met. I measured myself as having a score of 8.

F60.3 Emotionally unstable personality disorder
F60.30 Impulsive type
- (1) A marked tendency to act unexpectedly and without consideration of the consequences.
- (2) A marked tendency to quarrelsome behaviour and to conflicts with others, especially when impulsive acts are thwarted or criticized.
- (3) Liability to outbursts of anger or violence, with inability to control the resulting behavioural explosions.
- (4) Difficulty in maintaining any course of action that offers no immediate reward.
- (5) Unstable and capricious mood.
F60.31 Borderline type
- (6) Disturbances in and uncertainty about self-image, aims and internal preferences (including sexual).
- (7) Liability to become involved in intense and unstable relationships, often leading to emotional crises.
- (8) Excessive efforts to avoid abandonment.
- (9) Recurrent threats or acts of self-harm.
- (10) Chronic feelings of emptiness.

For me: 1(1) + 4(2) + 5(2) + 8(2) + 10(1) = 8 |

I was worried when I scored a 7-8, but i see thats only a Mild
So for my reference, I seem to be moderately avoidant, schizotypal and paranoid. Hmm, how serious is it to score moderate for that many? |

My friend has Borderline. It must be hard to live with. Hey, Neant. How do you live with it? I was hoping you could give me some advice that I could pass on to my friend. _________________ |

This may or may not be true of, or of value to your friend, but there is considerable controversy as to the validity of borderline personality disorder as a diagnostic category separate from other disorders, especially bipolar disorder, dissociative disorders and PTSD (I can dig out references if you want, from a paper I wrote on this). Unfortunately, it's a diagnosis with many pejorative connotations for psychiatrists -- "What do you do with borderlines? You refer them".
By definition, a personality disorder is a "disorder of the personality", and as this implies, resistant to change. On a personal note, I was diagnosed with BPD several years ago, and right now I meet almost none of the criteria. So for whatever my advice may be worth, face the issues and deal with the pain that is behind the behaviour and don't let yourself be defined by a label if it doesn't help or ring true for you.
Yeah, my pedantic nature is showing |
