when I was in school I was always taught to write letters by starting at the top and going down with the pen but i've always started at the bottom with most of my letters and numbers. Teachers and my parents seemed to always think it was cool. They didn't get upset because it didn't affect the quality of my work.

Does anyone else do this or write in a different unique way?

I used to write that way. I got in trouble for it. The teachers made a big deal of it. They complained to my parents. So my parents got mad at me about it too. They said I did it because I was lazy and stupid. They bought handwriting books and made me practice my handwriting at home on the weekends. Just because I started my letters at the bottom instead of the top.

I would start from the bottom too. I would get crap from my dad about how bad my handwriting was.

Same here, starting from the bottom. I got comments about how weird that was. Now I tend to alternate bottom and top, and my past teachers have complimented me on my handwriting.

Sorry about getting off topic; I do it all the time. About my signature, I got it from some British comedian. I can't remember his name.

I've never paid much attention to my handwriting before, except that it's downright atrocious. I just tried starting from the bottom, and damned if it didn't look more legible. that could be due to the concetration, but I'm going to play around with this and see if it improves my handwriting.

And it is a very nice signature.

I've always written my numbers and letters from the bottom up. Isn't it strange that we do this and why? When writing on the chalk board in front of the class, people would laugh their asses off at me and thought it was eccentric. Although I have to admit that my handwriting is crap. When I write, when there are no boundaries, I'll write very big boxy letters. The writing on my letters will be about an inch long. Crazy.

My 1st grade teacher told me that my handwriting was "atrocious".

I've always started the stems at the top, but I remember years ago starting the bowls of letters at the bottom. My teacher at the time told me that was the wrong way to do it. I didn't understand why, but I complied. Of course, my handwriting is totally different now. It became pretty normal for a time, if hard to read. But it got so bad, I decided to change it.

My previous handwriting:

My new handwriting:

Now I use both, switching according to the situation.

I start from the bottom, often make letters in several different ways and tend to mix print with cursive. I write leftie, but throw a ball and do most other things with my right arm. I also write pretty well backwards. My handwriting is nearly unintelligible to other people and sometimes I can't even decipher what I wrote the day before. Any suggestions on how I may improve are welcome!

However, teachers and my parents tried valiantly to teach me good penmanship, but alas yet another failed attempt to "fix" me.

I block print anything and everything to such perfection that I'm often told it looks like it came out of a printer. my cursive is 'atrocious' and unless I copy someone elses style of plain letter handwriting it looks horrid.

I write very big, elegant cursive... I have about 3 different 'scripts' though, some printed, some cursive, some a combo. I'm a calligrapher too, and I speak/write Japanese so I guess that's why - I've had to spend hours concentrating on my writing at times.

This is how I write. I had to use some kind of tool attached to my pencil when I learned to write, as I had the reflex of writing with both handsl. I also was way too perfectionnist about it, and it resulted as the poor unstylised handwriting I have today.
