NOS just means "not otherwise specified." Different NOS diagnoses have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

I'm a little confused. NOS is not a Disorder. It stands for Not Otherwise Specified. It NOS = you have the affiliated disorder but are excluded from formal diagnoses due to not meeting criteria defining the disorder. Every disorder in the DSM has a NOS version. Basically it says you have it but don't meet standard diagnostic criteria.

Hallucination NOS is in no way related to colitis NOS.

EDIT::
Opp, Orwell beat me to it. i knew i took to long wording my response to get first response.

"NOS" is just a modifier to go with whatever disease/disorder you're talking about.

Basically, NOS is used in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) for psychiatrists to fill out insurance forms. The DSM is not a guide to conditions...or at least, it's not meant to be. It is organized by number. If a psychiatrist feels, for example, that someone has Prevasive Development Disorder....but has some additional problems, they will code their interview forms with PDD NOS.

Hope that helps.

Very Happy NOS just means that doctors don't know much about a lot of things! It's a jargon way of saying 'Jeeez! What do I know?! Could be anything!'

I think it means you meet some symptoms of a disorder, but not quite enough to qualify for a diagnosis. Or it can mean that the doctors are unsure as to what it is.
