Well basically, the past few months of my life have been a huge period of self-discovery. Before finding out I am an INTJ, and now an Aspie, I used to think there was somthing extremely wrong with me. I'm 16 now, and before now, ever since...well as far as I can remember, I'm like "Why don't people like me? Why am I so different? Why am I so nervous to just be out there and do things like all the other kids?" But now, I'm really happy to find not one, but two communities full of people just like me. At first I didn't think I had Asperger's, but I watched those clips of If You Could Say It In Words and was extremely moved. It just hit home for me, because I to am an African-American male in a society where everyone thinks you must "act black",like the guy in the movie. Just, everything about him, even down to the fact that he was skinny as hell, I could relate to. Then I took the quiz, and I'm sure if I had the resources available, I'd be diagnosed. But alas, I don't.

But anyways, I'm wondering, yeah there's all this science behind it, but is there anything you just LOVE about being an Aspie? What kinds of careers are ideal for people like us?

Heh, I'm always told I act outside of "my race", why I don't speak a certain language by ignorant peers. I just respond by asking "What do you mean by race? What do you mean by nationality? Did you know..." and go on explaining things they've no understanding of. It either shuts them up or gets them angry, either way they stop bothering me. Others ask why I am not more mainstream, I just say "For a people who want to be different, you surely want to remain the same."

I am not to sure if I love being myself. I know no one else. I've just gotten used to being me.

As far as careers go, I have many options. Currently I am sticking to Computer Science. I am horrible with math but perserance is the key. I will not stop until I am forced to both physically and mentally.

Hey Obstinate, I'm pretty new here too. I'm also a black aspie, so I can relate to where you're coming from.
I don't know a lot about AS yet, but I think it's because of AS that I am more creative and intelligent than average. I don't think I'd want to trade that away.

Trying to get by with a ASD in a competitive world is hard. Many with ASD who make an attempt at a career end up doing crappy jobs, living with constant anxiety and fear. You could opt out and live like a hermit on benefits but what kind of an existence is that? God AS is so depressing.

Positives? - pfff, well, a good long term memory and logical/problem solving skills if you're lucky. Who wouldn't sacrifice the strengths just to have people not being uneasy around you?

Sorry about the negatives, but I'm being honest.

One great thing about being autistic is it only lasts as long as you live Smile

Ok good points about being high functioning autistic (similar to asperger's).
He is honest. He can regonise numbers to 1000. Can't think of any more he is telling me "Ina (I'm a) big bit hungry" and it is late for him (9.16pm) Laughing

Yep, intelligence seems to be the only benefit. And I'm using benefit very loosely. No social skills + Ability to understand things others don't and want to portray that to them, only to find they hate you for it = Further loneliness.

Pffft, sponging off the government is an advantage as far as I'm aware. I managed to get a new shiny mac and a scanner and printer to go to university with. Very Happy Although for some reason they don't want to give my Disabled Living Allowance. >>

Think about all the people who want to stand out from the crowd and be "individual"! You can do that without trying. XD Plus, as a general rule, autistics (dunno if it applies to the whole range of diagnosis's or just HFA) are more attractive - "elfish", or "implike". It gives you a chance to have a look at society from an outside view and make your own decisions about things properly.

And look at it this way - things could be worse.

I find if you try to hide the crazy, and try your best to hold most of the thoughts in, then you make more friends. But then again I wouldn't know much in that category. What about occupation-wise though?
