The Truth About Autism: Scientists Reconsider What They Think They Know
[Wired March 2008]

It shows Amanda, maybe you've already seen her Youtube video.

Quote:
People like Baggs fall at one end of an array of developmental syndromes known as autism spectrum disorders. The spectrum ranges from someone with severe disability and cognitive impairment to the socially awkward eccentric with Asperger's syndrome.

Here's the link to the full article. Enjoy :)

I certainly did enjoy! What a refreshing breath of air in the autism circles!

For those who don't use their own names maybe? I saw only the usual distortions! No evident link with what autism really means.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Could you elaborate?

I just finished the article - how nice to see something like this in the general media. I especially love the line, "...to a remarkable degree, scientists conducting cognitive evaluations continue to use tests which presume that people who can't communicate the answer don't know the answer."

Very interesting article, and I was surprised they talk about the Montréal's hospital, this is where I go!

I lived most of my life in Montreal. I'll have to see that anyway because everyone likes it and it seems like good, non-threatening news for once. :)

One of the vary first articles on Aspergers I ever read, was in Wired, about an autism cluster in Silicon Valley (should this surprise anyone?). That article (1) made me solidly sure that the cause is genetic and (2) helped me focus on all the good things that come from a brain wired a little differently.

This article is similar, in trying to offer a positive perspective.

Silicon Valley attacts Aspies. The magazine is produced within a community that by its very nature should value neurodiversity.

Personally, my theory is that we're all actually from another planet and were mistakenly swapped somehow so that we ended up here. And sometimes, I'm only half-joking with that. My Aspie teenage son certainly wonders about it.

Ahhh... It's nice to know that we've got Wired magazine on our side! It's not exactly a psychology journal, but every ally helps in the fight to greater acceptance of autism/Asperger's

I've been sharing and passing that link (and the you-tube movie) along for NT's to read. There are a couple inaccuracies though that Amanda points out in her blog somewhere.

Hi, I've read that one too, also a very good one, highly recommended:

My doctor said something to that effect. He told me I (and his other AS/HFA patients) remind him of the creatures in "Men in Black"--out of place and stuffed into bodies that don't fit them.

This is the article that made the first *ding* in my head, I took the AQ test from the wired site years ago and this is where it started...
I then made some research on AS and hit this site, and take an ap to a doctor to get a diagnostic
