THE DSM-IV DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR ASPERGER’S SYNDROME
(A) Qualitative impairment in social interaction, as manifested by at least two of the following:
1. Marked impairment in the use of multiple nonverbal behaviors such as eye-to-eye gaze, facial expression, body postures, and gestures to regulate social interaction
2. Failure to develop peer relationships appropriate to developmental level
3. A lack of spontaneous seeking to share enjoyment, interests, or achievements with other people (e.g., by a lack of showing, bringing, or pointing out objects of interest to other people)
4. Lack of social or emotional reciprocity.
(B) Restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities, as manifested by at least one of the following:
1. Encompassing preoccupation with one or more stereotyped and restricted patterns of interest that is abnormal either in intensity or focus
2. Apparently inflexible adherence to specific, non-functional routines or rituals
3. Stereotyped and repetitive motor mannerisms (e.g., hand or finger flapping or twisting, or complex whole-body movements)
4. Persistent preoccupation with parts of objects
(C) The disturbance causes clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
(D) There is no clinically significant general delay in language (e.g., single words used by age 2 years, communicative phrases used by age 3 years)
(E) There is no clinically significant delay in cognitive development or in the development of age-appropriate self-help skills, adaptive behavior (other than in social interaction), and curiosity about the environment in childhood.
(F) Criteria are not met for another specific Pervasive Developmental Disorder or Schizophrenia.

This chart does not mean that everyone with AS was simply rejected. It's just one way to be diagnosed.

Well, there are some who would think they have AS just becuase they are rejected, kind of like people who say that [insert name of aspie here] doesn't have AS because the are well-liked by some (and I am one of those). There are even some who would go so far as to use it as a crutch (which is the exact opposite of what I do, since I have many friends, but none of them know about my AS except those who are exceptionally close friends and have proven their trust. I'm very good at acting NT and masking my AS, it is something I have learned how to do over time). As far as i'm concerned, these people are no better than those who act like they are impaired to get the handicapped parking spot at the supermarket. Idiots.

I knew a guy last year and he found a handicap permit for parking in a handicap spot and he uses it he told me but only sometimes when he is in a rush or doesn't want to park far from the store. I thought it was wrong. Plus the thing wasn't even registered to his car.

I was on my first date with this guy and he pulls up to the club (that was PACKED) and pulls right into the handicapped parking spot out front. I just had time to turn and look at him and he pulls out a stack of handicapped parking hangers and picks one and hangs it on the rear view mirror. He actually thought I was going to be IMPRESSED! by his cleverness in beating the system. I called a cab and went home.

Did that guy work at a garage by chance? I have handicap parking permit because I am physically handicapped. My dad warned me whenever I took my car for an oil change to hide the handicap permit because mechanics are bad about stealing them. How on Earth did that guy get a stack of them?

Sorry but that is just so pathetic! What kind of person pays people to steal handicap permits? And why does he need a stack of the tags? I wish I was not physically disabled and could walk long distances like a normal person!

Wow, you must not get out much. There are people out there that made the whole west coast go through rolling blackouts to coerce an 'emergency energy crunch" and then hiked up energy bills (Enron) there are people that purchase machete blades for 10cents a piece and committ atrocities on 'classes' of people that were seperated out two generations before by a**holes colonials. (Rwanda)
Someone paying for stolen handicapped hangers are pretty low, but people can get much lower.

That makes a lot of sense to me. I went on about my obsessions, until I was in High School, after I was chastised for talking about them. That lead to the fact that I've kept my special interests to myself, in my teens and I still make an effort to do so, unless I'm around friends who really understand me. As a result of my keeping my interests to myself, in High School, I wasn't able develop relationships with my peers, at the appropriate age level, therefore people hated me more, because I was quiet and I didn't have any friends, at all.
