Here's a scale I dug up years ago and then forgot about that people might want to check out. It measures three different types of empathy, plus personal distress (= anxiety getting in way of acting empathic). Max scores 28 on each scale.
interpersonal reactivity index
Means:
Fantasy: men 15.73, women 18.75
Perspective-taking: men 16.78, women 17.96
Empathic Concern: men 19.04, women 21.67
Personal Distress: men 9.46, women 12.28
me:
fantasy: 28
perspective taking:23
empathic concern: 27
personal distress: 21
(I have a fondness for scales I score high on.)
Of course, empathy is all relative, right? |

I'm a girl so my scores seem even lower in comparison. _________________ "I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions."--Augusten Burroughs |

I felt it was a bit ambiguous about "emergency" situations. I don't know if I have really ever been in situations that I would consider emergencies. In any case, I seem to lack empathy. This is consistent with the unanimous verdict of my English class that I have no soul. _________________ WAR IS PEACE

However, this isnt a measure of NT empathy, it is a measure of something else. I still dont pay much attention to body language or non-verbals and I dont absorb others feelings when I am around them. _________________ "Caravan is the name of my history, and my life an extraordinary adventure."

I wasn't sure about the main character questions - a few characters I really get into, they get more real than real people to me. But most movie and book characters I don't like or feel with. _________________ The rule for today.

I'm often told I am emotionless. I do not usually express much emotion, not do I really feel much emotion. I know I lack empathy as well. However I know I'm not a robot. I just tend to rationalize away my emotions. In an emergency or really tense emotional situation I'm a good person to have around because I can always think clearly and not panic.
I am female so my scores are really low in comparison to NT women. I try not to look at it as me having no soul or being emotionless....I do experience emotions from time to time, but I may experience them differently.....empathy is something I do lack, and I don't think I really can ever learn to empathize. |

Just because you don't "feel someone's pain" doesn't mean you can't be helpful. I view someone having a problem as a "state of chaos" that I try to fix. People learn not to come to me to just "vent". For example, if a friend of the family complains about an abusive member in their household, I'm right there with the cops and later completed restraining order paperwork awaiting their signature. _________________ Yeah with all of these men lining up to get neutered

Shows a pretty highly cognitive empathy style. Other peoples' distress doesn't really bother me--but I do try to understand and relieve it. _________________ Engineering student. Gamer. Christian. Asexual. Information Addict. Deal with it!
