socially retarded introverts?
Dont get me wrong, Im not saying that it is..
Im just wondering if its possible
If King Clarity were to one day decide that..
"everyone is different", then dismiss our conditions
as irrational and take away all our meds, would we fall
in line along with everyone else and simply make the
best of it, or would we curl up and die? _________________ ALT+F4=Life |

| How to tell the difference between an Aspie and someone who is just a socially retarded introvert? What is the difference in actual terms? Is it just a matter of preferred semantics? |

Look, I dunno about you, but I was diagnosed by Doctor Tony Attwood himself. And I seem to be the only one here who was diagnosed by Doctor Attwood. So, out of you all, I am probably as close to a definitive AS diagnosis as you can get without having had one from Hans Asperger himself.
I prefer socially disinclined than 'socially impaired', which is your definition, once sanitised. _________________ Once it gets going, though, it's a roller coaster thrill ride - a roller coaster that stops dead every now and again like it's run by British Rail. -Yahtzee on GTA IV |

*Semantics?
actual terms?
are you looking for medical terms?
I dont think one needs be real specific
to pose this question or a doctor to answer
it. Answers are personal, subjective, and
not the opinion of a practicing physician.
My honest opinion regarding the aspies I know and have met (not exactly a random sample) is that they seem stunted somehow socially. Good workers.. smart too but lost to oblivion someplace where the same rules do not apply. Im carefull not to call them out on the spot due to their tendencies. I tell them "everyone is different".. but deep down I think in most cases these traits are similar. I see a lot of unnecessary isolation, awkwardness in social settings, and all manner of atypical behavior.
feel free to ask me about atypical behavior
I have a long list _________________ ALT+F4=Life |

I assume you do what you have to do
to achieve a sense of normality
congrats if for you that involves nothing more

disinclined rather than impaired implies
there is a choice involved. I like that.
Im going to be retested and pass this time
I will give my scrips up if it helps
I can do it

Is it possible that AS is merely an excuse for socially retarded introverts?
Is it possible that cancer is merely an excuse for out-of-control cell growth? Is it possible that sunburn is merely an excuse for painfully-sensitive, reddened skin? Is it possible that death by hanging is merely an excuse for swinging gently back and forth from a rope tied around one's neck?
And, as has been repeatedly pointed out, there are no meds to deal with AS. It is a neurological condition, not a biochemical one. You may have one or more of the common biochemical comorbid disorders (most notably OCD and chronic depression), which are chemically treatable - but tossing your meds would not affect your AS, it would only ensure your falling victim to the comorbid disorder that the med treats. (If you have no comorbids, then by all means, toss the meds, as they're probably not doing you any good at all.)
I don't know why some folks are so desperate to become NTs, anyway. I've had many opportunities recently to observe NTs close up, and they seem to spend most of their time feeling pretty darn miserable, always worrying about what other people think of them and whether they're fitting in with an undefined societal expectation. Why, the couple down the way had a fierce argument just yesterday, culminating in her coming over to seek sympathy from my wife, because she wanted to clean their house before they went away for a few days, and he muttered something under his breath, then got angry when asked to repeat it! Just one of the times I felt happy to be AS - my wife would never assume that anything I said that she couldn't hear must be a hurtful remark, and I'd never say anything that wasn't supposed to come out at conversational volume anyway (she knows by now to take me at face value!). Life's so much easier this way... _________________ One man's "magic" is another man's engineering. "Supernatural" is a null word. - Robert A. Heinlein |

This thread itself is ridiculous, but are we now playing the game of "my-diagnosis-is-better-than-your-diagnosis"? Oy. Not all of us live in Australia, and it is a bit presumptuous to proclaim Attwood The Definited AS Expert just because he's written books and goes to many conferences. There are lesser known professionals who also have extensive experience in working with people who have ASDs. Let's not glorify AS "celebrities." |
