It wasn't even a long visit, just enough for the entire setting and experience to drive me three shades of inner turmoil. Thank goodness I'm home.

I know the feeling, the sounds, and that awful smell... not to mention having someone's hands in your mouth. Not my idea of a good time.

I have it in for optometrists; the 'puff in your eye', deaden your eyeballs and poke at them is like torture to me.. heck, I'm tearing up now... |

Tell me about it... My teeth are in a bad condition purely because I don't dare to go to the dentist. My previous two dentists both knew I am hypersensitive and that I needed more numbing, but they replied in a very blunt way and I was in pain and fear throughout the process. Since then I just have an inner frontier in going again and always delay it, even though my teeth really need to be looked after. I just don't dare to do it though...

You young people dont know what real dental fear is.
Nowadays you can hardly feel anything, modern drill etc.
Go back 40 or 50 years before they kindly gave you a local aneasthetic and used what felt like a hammer drill on your teeth, that was something to fear! |

Hell, I'm thrilled not to live in a time when dentistry was a bottle of liquor and a pair of pliers. Wish I had the insurance to go to one now.
Mmmmmm...flouride...
'course I had so much orthodontic surgery as a child, I associate the dentist's chair with laughing gas, a nap and a groggy ride home...

i'm convinced that dentists (not all, i'm sure, but probably most) deliberately injure healthy teeth to create more work for themselves and their brethren. it's happened three times to me that i've been anesthetized to have work done, only to have a nearby tooth suddenly be in much pain and need lots of work just a few weeks later, when i had never had problems with that tooth before. anyone else?
just because you're paranoid don't mean they're not after you.
and there was the time i was surprised at how many shots of novocaine i was getting, then suddenly had a seizure half an hour later and then had a surprise fever of 105 (?!), when i felt fine when i went in. and the one that dropped the crown down my throat - not a fun thing to choke on - and then forgot to put the adhesive on it so i had to come back an hour later. and the whole getting a bill for $900+ over a year after the work was completed, when i had paid in full after every visit.
i'm totally anti-dentite.

I need to see a dentist because of a big hole in a wisdom tooth but am quite scared. I will ask around to see if anyone I know can tell me a good one to see. I also think some dentists damage teeth to make more work for themselves eg. by taking out perfectly good fillings and drilling even deeper.

| I am scared to death of going to the dentist because I know my teeth are really bad. I probably have 20 cavities and I'm not joking. I don't think I have been to the dentist in 4 years. I grind my teeth, have a dry mouth and most of my teeth are destroyed or have the world's biggest cavities. I have a reason to fear the dentist. I am going in July and I'm so nervous that they will yell at me. My brother recently went in and he had I'm not making this up but 29 cavities! I brush and floss but that doesn't seem to help, it is almost pointless since my teeth are in such bad condition. My teeth are smaller than the average person's because of all the grinding. I grind during the day because I am anxious all the time. |

for those who have any sort of problems/behavior/risks when at the dentists-get them to write that in the records! they have all the problems am have,and would be likely to do written in red pen in am records.
also,for those with diagnosed autism,as,pddnos...a learning disability..whatever,if the problems with being at a dentists are severe [this could be sensory,behavioral etc] see if could get referred to a disability specialised dentist [one who only deals with those with disabilities],they can have much better understanding [think they only accept diagnosed].
am recommend asking for general anaesthetic for when any work is needed to be done,if are still at risk under IV sedation,am have this done for any work-apart from just the check up which is done at the health clinic.
lots of people say GAs made them sick and bad all day afterwards,but that depends,autists especially would differ with this one as
tend to have atypical reactions to drugs.

You can't always get away from that. The past three times I've had any type of dental surgery (all replacing enamel, really), they used novicane, but it wasn't enough, and it wore off halfway through. They'd say, "Can you feel that?" I'd nod, because I could, and it hurts, and they go, "Oh well."
I hate dentists as well.
My aunt goes to a dentist where they sedate her so that she sleeps through it, but apparently they're rather hard to find.

I do. I've learned to associate the dentist office with short term pain to eliminate long term discomfort. It makes me feel better. |

What I hate most is not the sounds, smells or the idea of a drill frictioning against my teeth. In fact, I'm okay with those.
What I hate most is the stupid anesthetic he uses. 80% of the time his initial dose is not enough and he has to apply (and thus stick the syringe in) a second time. And the feeling of numbness stays on for quite awhile after the procedure is done with.... when I try to eat something I usually chew my own tongue along with the food.
And when the numbness does go away, I feel pain from the syringe perforation.
I really think dentists should invent better anesthetics. |
