Okay, I am opening this thread about discussion about Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
However, some ground rules:
*Try and keep some of the biggest spoilers to yourselves. Hints, as long as they are subtle, are fine.
*If questions about the plot arise, please resolve by PM.
Now, I know something about how this game ends, thanks to YouTube spoilers, but in fact, I am waiting for GameFAQs to start letting FAQs in, along with a game script (I don't have a PS3). I won't spoil anything major.
However, I'll let you know this much: it resolves the whole Patriots issue, and actually harks back to dialogue in MGS: Portable Ops. In fact, if you played that, then you know that Big Boss and Ocelot were founding members of the Patriots, and if you payed more attention, you could have deduced the identity of a third member.
I'm posting this now because the game is just about to be released in the US. Any overt spoilers will be edited out, at least for the next few days. I got the game today have played it for about 4 hours now. Kinda of taking my time, but not going too slow either.
I'm just after the shootout with the FROGs right now.
Still learning the tricks to the controls. There's a lot to remember.
Really liking using the MK II to scout ahead before proceeding. Kind of a bummer though that the Solid Eye runs out of power. I want to keep it on indefinitely.
So anyone else notice that the Gecko's sound like enraged cows? _________________ Current obsessions: Economic and Political issues

Well I'm in Act 2 now.
Haven't progressed too much into it yet, but went back and replayed Act 1 again. This time i just wanted to goof around and see what I could do. Some comments:
You can shoot out the legs on the Geckos, however it only immobilizes them temporarily. (Don't even think about trying to CQC them)
Despite what the game says, you(the player) can't actually browse the Playboy magazines. It just makes Snake browse them.
It is possible to shoot down the airstrike helicopters.
Ring up Otacon while inside a garbage bin.
The blue vans explode if you shoot them a few times. (Meaning don't use them for cover in a firefight)
The PMC sucks, they always shoot at me. Go terrorists. On that note, it's real easy to make friends with the rebels by blowing up a PMC transport of killing enough PMC troops. However something I do want to try next time is to see if it's possible to make friends with the PMC by killing the rebels. If so, then I wonder if they'll let you walk right into Liquid's camp...
It's rather easy to amass Drebin points if you let the rebels keep getting killed by the PMC in the street battles. The battles go on indefinitely as far as I can tell with both sides respawning ad infinitum.
One really should watch the First mission briefing before starting a new game.
There are more guns in this game than you could possibly ever need....
On that note, don't even bother buying guns from Drebin. Just find guns and have him unlock them. It's much cheaper.
In cutscenes, L1 gives an alternate view, X seems to trigger Snake's memories with flashbacks. _________________ Current obsessions: Economic and Political issues

What are the flashbacks like? I've been watching most of the cutscenes on YouTube, but you never see these flashbacks. Are they sequences ripped directly from the game they were from? Or do they have some sort of narration? _________________ At moments when monsters spawn in by rising up from the ground, it turns the action into a gory, protracted session of Whack-A-Mole.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this topic for a bit. :p
They're just quick images of stuff from previous games. (Although oddly enough Drebin got his own flashback once)
So I've made it to Act 4 now... whee... The nostalgia stage.
But Act 3... wow. Not a whole lot of the action there but a lot of the overall story is explained in this act. Now we know just who the Patriots are, how and why they formed and the details of how the Snake bros came into being. It alls ties back into MGS3. _________________ Current obsessions: Economic and Political issues

i played through the first chapter at my best friend's house. since i don't own it and probably won't any time soon i'm probably missing most of the experience but here are my impressions.
the new camera REALLY takes some getting used to. i altered it so the control is inverted and that seemed to help.
i understand the logic of switching to controls similar to that of a first person shooter but if that was the intention i really wish they'd added an auto lock-on button. the stun knife seems a little lame to me. using it lacked the visceral thrill MGS3 had of sneaking up on an enemy guard and taking them out with CQC.
by the end of the chapter though i started getting the hang of things and wanted to try it some more. maybe he'll have me back sometime soon so i can be more thorough. _________________ OH GOODIE!.net

I really like the game so far, but I feel that there's less emphasis on stealth this time as often you're forced to traverse open spaces with no hiding places, and have to fight your way through. However I've only just reached Act 2 so it's too early for me to judge the game as a whole.
The story is much slower to get off the ground than pretty much any of the previous Metal Gears, I've found.
Graphically the game reminds me very much of Call of Duty 4. |

There is an auto-aim in the game. You have to activate in the options and can switch it off and on with the square button. I haven't used auto-aim much, however it does help tons in the driving and shooting part in Act 3. (for that matter, whenever you get there, ditch the shitty gun you're given you're given and use a P90)
Sigh... I was almost at the end of Act 4 last night... then I lost power.
I have to start Act 4 over right from the beginning. Probably won't have time for that until Thursday... _________________ Current obsessions: Economic and Political issues

Well I couldn't sleep last night, so screw it. I finished the game.
I want to avoid spoiling stuff so I'll try to be vague.
Ending stuff of Act 4, wow. "Holy sh**, this is awesome!" sums that up.
Act 5 wasn't that long but had the toughest part of the game right at the start(for me anyways).
Let's just say, for that first part, if you get an alert you are as good as dead. Took me 15 continues before I figured out it was impossible to run and gun that part.
and another button mashing part here. God, I hate button mashing parts. (I was never able to win the button mashing part in MGS no matter how hard I tried) But I got through it. Actually I didn't die at all after that first part above surprisingly.
The ending... pretty long. It does seem to wrap everything up.
I enjoyed it very much so. Very close to a perfect for me. I would just say some of the cutscenes are a little too long. _________________ Current obsessions: Economic and Political issues

Well I finished the game tonight on the standard difficulty. Wow, what a fantastic game. I have very few complaints to make of it. The only big problem I have with the story is the ending. The ending is great until the credits roll, then there's a second bit of ending that messes it up. I assume they did that to leave room for a sequel.
I'm going to play through again but this time I'll try to get through without alerting or killing anyone. I've gone through Act 1 so far while fulfilling these conditions. It's a lot easier once you get the hang of the controls. |
