How much do your obsessions mean to you? Do you love or hate them and the time you spend on them. And how much of yourself do you put into your obsessions? How do they make you feel when you are spending time with them? Would you like to share them with others or prefer to keep them to yourself?
You don't have to answer all the questions, but talk a little about your obsessions.
(I don't use the term obsession in a negative sense. I prefer 'interests' but 'obsessions' maybe suggests the powerful attachment a lot of us feel towards the things that float our boats .) |

Collections department topic
I have mini collections of many things, but my chief collection/obsession/interest is keys and locks. i wear a big wad of them on a belt loop of what ever pants I am wearing. Not worth much, except to me. The jingly key ratting noise drives both my kids and the neighbour dogs nuts. I would be upset if my keys were no longer there. I like the feel of my keys and the rattling. The heaviness hanging is like an anchor to this world, ny keys are a security metaphor. I also carry around a couple of locks--one is a padlock with a key, the other is a dudley combo lock. I also like keychains, and have a collection of them. _________________ Radical Aspergian

I used to have a ton of obsessions and rituals. When I found out that I was an aspie two years ago and that these things were actually symptoms, I started doing what I could to get rid of them. Still, its important to distinguish between an obsession and a hobby.
What I collected was empty jars. It seemed odd that anyone would want to throw those away. Now, they go in they trash. Except for those big plastic ones of course. And the giant glass ones too. |

Yes, I agree. For example I'm interested in cricket, but to no greater degree than my NT husband and NT sister, so that's not an obsession. So how would 'obsession' be defined? Personally, I feel it would be by the degree of attachment - passion if you like, that one feels about whatever it is. I like cricket, but I adore peacocks, they hold a fascination for me which goes way deeper than just 'liking'. Just thinking about them makes me |

I'm at an awkward stage right now. I have to get a driver's license and a job, so I lack focus and time for my interests. And it makes me feel very awkward, and a little sad.
So yeah, important: Yes, quite. _________________ I can make a statement true by placing it first in this signature.

They are very important to me because I consider them part of my personal identity. _________________

I collected quite a bit when I was younger-books, baseball cards and the like. Now, I can't say I collect anything. I move fairly regularly and hauling stuff from place to place is annoying.
I tend to waste time and energy on things that really aren't that important as a means to relieve stress or avoid doing something else that needs doing. Frequently, it is because I am not sure how to do it, or what the outcome is going to be.
I will spend countless hours reading and researching some subject that caught my interest, or follow the ongoings of a
sports team or field I like. At the time it can be quite satisfying, but usually I feel resentful later when I realize how much time
I have lost. |

I feel like there some that are a little important but not as important as I make them out to be.
I've collected stuff which turned into hoarding. Glad to say, I'm working on that. I've felt that music shouldn't be that important yet it's another obsession of mine. I can't stop listening to it and feel it's unproductive or so I've been told. Not saying it's bad it's just that it's turned into another obsession of mine.
Now drawing I consider important as well as journalizing and writing. I think they're a part of me and they're constructive. It's just hard to move from one productive task to another when it's an obsession that's hard to control or notice. _________________ God is a concept by which we measure our pain.

| Not very, i may act as if they are important sometimes and sometimes i instinctively feel that they are important when i cant indulge myself in them or am interrupted. But I've come to understand that they are actually (for the most part) worthless albeit pleasing. Did i even make sense? o.O |

I don't have obsessions as such (just hobbies) but I get very attached to things and those things are very important to me.
I don't think that's the same thing though.
Come to think of it I have a sort of obsession with vitamin and mineral therapy for Tourette's syndrome at the moment. It's quite important to me because I have Tourette's syndrome. _________________ I don't have Aspergers, I'm just socially inept

| I've tried to "keep myself rounded" by changing my obsession exactly every two months for the past two and a half years. It's been great. So, I'm not so attached to any one obsession, but it's important that I have one. Most obsessions have no real value, but one of my two month "themes" that I had has turned out to be real great. I started doing geneology research and my close and distant relatives are really glad that I have. It's nice to see someone appreciate the results of hours stacked upon hours of research. |
