I just found this amazing band, anyone else like them? (I heard they are huge in the UK, but I live in the US, virtually unknown here). Here is an example of their music.

Also, the old lead singer left, replaced with a new girl, this is one of her songs.

Nice Discovery! Yeah Nightwish and countless other bands dont get alot of publicity here in the us, including the underground scenes. They swing from symphonic to gothic metal. If u like them that much i have quite a bit of other similar bands to recommend like : Apocalyptica , epica , moonspell , the gathering , my dying bride , therion, and theres definately more.

Nightwish is my all-time favourite band, I've been their fan for years. Especially their older albums are masterpieces. The new stuff is great too but I prefer their old, more operatic and progressive style. My favourite albums are Oceanborn and Century child, can't decide which one is better.

If you like their style, I highly recommend Delain. It's very similiar and almost as good as Nightwish. Nightwish's basist Marco's a guest singer on a few of their songs too.

Saw them live in March (vid below, someone else's doing) - they rrrrocked that night!

Similar bands also worth listening to: Leaves' Eyes, Xandria and most of all the great Within Temptation.

Not a fan, but I do enjoy many of their songs. Sleeping Sun, Amaranth and Nemo are my favourites. Nemo and Amaranth have great lyrics really.

"Oh how I wish for soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart lost in the dark
For hope I'd give my anything"

Great stuff.

I saw them in concert in Berlin a few months ago, they were very good live. I like the new singer, she's much more spontaneous and easy going than Tarja, and I think her voice suits the new songs very well. Amaranth is one of their best songs to date (although much has to do with Tuomas' lyrics on that one)

I freakin LOVE Nightwish! Marco is freakin awesome!
It's interesting that you say they're virtually unknown in the us since they just finished up a Us tour. and from what I hear it was pretty successful. But then again, I didn't hear about it in the general media. though the only thing the general media seems to publicize these days are Paris hilton and brangelina.

Within Temptation a similar band? Not sure, unless you count in all female-fronted metal bands, but then you can just as well compare Lacuna Coil and Evanescence to Nightwish. Within Temptation and Nightwish are lyrically very different and musically not that similar. And by the way, Sharon Den Adel live doesn't convince me, while Annette Olzon is a great live singer!

Maybe the best of those female-fronted metal bands though, is Lacuna Coil IMO. Cristina Scabbia has an amazing voice (and her legs are too hot to be true Embarassed ) and the band has some really interesting songs. Ironically their best song in my opinion is one of their few ballads: "Stars". But their heavier work is usually very good as well. I only wish they'd more frequently sing in their native Italian, all band members are from Milan but they only have a handful of songs in Italian.

I like NightWish lots. At least before Dark Passion Play. Though, "The Poet and the Pendellum" has a great intense chorus.

I don't like Annette's voice. I miss Tarja. >.> I know I'm in the minority there and I know she's a horrible drama queen but...I just love her voice.

They did become more original without Tarja, the number of metal bands using a female soprano vocal have become so big... What was a novelty first has grown to become some sort of new norm.

The Gathering were the first band to get success with female opera vocals combined with metal music. Unfortunately the band is no longer existing, at least not with its original line-up.

I like their songs "Amaranth" and "Wish I Had An Angel", but I don't really enjoy their other songs.

The Islander is a cool song (though I am not as big of a metal fan as I was in the past, I just like that's song's melody and lyrics)

I quite like Nightwish. My favorite song by them has to be Creek Mary's Blood.

Perhaps am in the minority, but I hated Tarja's vocals. She's not a particularly good singer. Anette isn't as bad, IMO, although she sounds a bit more mainstream.

They aren't *huge* in the UK, although they are popular here nowadays - more so than they were during the Tarja years. They're much more popular in most other European countries.

Anyway... Wonderful band, old or new - I like it all, although I'm not so keen on the first album. If you want to hear (somewhat) similar bands, I recommend After Forever (Floor's voice floors me), Therion and Epica. If you like progressive/heavy metal, you should also look into Symphony X.

I love Nightwish, one of the first metal bands I got into. Now I listen to metal from the opposite end of the spectrum but I still adore Nightwish. I miss Tarja but I think Annette is pretty great.

Also, I second RedMetal. If you like Nightwish, definitely check out the other bands he mentioned. Smile
