I need a free file rename utility, but there are so many to pick from. What do you guys think is the best one?

I don't know whether it's the best, but I've used it since before time itself and it's been fine for my needs.

I'd recommend liberal usage of mv, sed and grep Very Happy

Which one is best depends on what you need it for.

This one is called Bulk Rename Utility:

It is freeware and very powerful, but also complicated.

Lupas Rename 2000 and Flexible Renamer are both freeware and somewhat simpler if you prefer that:

You might want to throw in find, and maybe vim... and if they're still stuck in the MS quagmire, cygwin.
