Hi everyone. I'm new to the forums and forums and recently found out I have Asperger's Syndrome. I haven't been officially diagnosed as I've been told the official testing is extremely tedious and costly, but I fit the symptoms so well that I don't have any doubt. I have always thought of myself as very eccentric, but I never would have guessed my eccentricities were a result of being on the autistic spectrum. A friend of mine once told me that I might has Asperger's when I explained to him that most of my facial expressions are a conscious effort to make interaction with other people less weird, and not really a natural reaction. He often made big deals over inconsequential things, so I didn't take his comment seriously at the time, or even bother to lookup what Asperger's was. I guess the joke is on me, eh? Anyway, I hope to contribute to the forums regularly to gain a better understand of myself and others who have similar traits.

I first learned what Asperger's Syndrome is less than two weeks ago. I called a local organization and got some information after reading some articles online. They recommended "Look Me in the Eyes: My Life with Asperger's Syndrome" (may not be exact title) as a good starting book if I wanted to do some reading. I picked it up and devoured it in a couple of days. I bought "The Complete Guide to Asperger's Sydrome" by Tony Attwood (I think) today and I am going to begin reading it soon.

I haven't quite managed to work out my feelings about things yet. It's weird feeling that I'm neurologically "impaired" after living all of my life until now with the belief that I could excel in just about anything if I really tried. I put impaired in parenthesis because I know that many of you do not think of it as an impairment, but it certainly feels like one to me when it comes to social interaction. Now, I realize that I my potential to be, say, a great public speaker, or just socially fluent isn't the same as your average person's potential. I feel limited, and I'm finding that I don't care for it much.

Thanks for reading, everyone.

Hi and welcome. Today is my first day on the forum, too. There is so much support here and you will quickly see how brilliant and funny and successful an Aspie can be. We all have our "impairments", whether we have a name for them or not. Ok, clearly some have a rougher time of things. I just wanted you to know that with or without AS, we're all stumbling through our lives doing the best that we can. I'm married to an Aspie, or at least that's what I am trying to figure out. Anyway, nice to meet you.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I appreciate your support.

Tim, you look disturbingly like someone I used to work with not too long ago. I've never been to Texas, though, so it has to be a coincidence.

I believe that Asperger syndrome or autistic people have uncanny abilities and I need to learn how to get my family members "on my side." Thanks for your insight.
