Does it ever seem like people feel they must talk to you in a tone better suited to a 5-year-old? It happens to me pretty much all the time. Most guys always chase me around, referring to me as their "best friend", when I am clearly not. Sometimes I have to give 'em a good kick in the leg (if I were more flexible I'd aim somewhere else) to tame them and keep them at bay.

YES. It's usually adults who do this to me, because they automatically think that because I'm on the autistic spectrum, I have the mental capacity of a 3 year old. The phrase "high functioning" just flies right over peoples' heads sometimes.

Some adults talk to me like that. It's semi amusing. I just roll my eyes. Usually, those kind of people aren't worth my time.

Yes. It doesn't help that I look about half my age or have "immature" interests (cartoons, video games). Of course, even when I was half as old as I am now, I got along with adults better than with children, and was far above grade level in most capacities. I even remember being 4 or 5, and resenting being talked down to!

I don't deny being immature, but I'm not an idiot.

Yes. Only ever by people in "official" capacities, naturally... Rolling Eyes

Rather than rant on this subject, we could learn from it. The crime these people are committing is to judge you (us) by a label, rather than judging us as individuals. We committ exactly the same offense when we characterize people based on race, gender, etc. I see, e.g., a lot of gender-based assumptions and stereotypes on these WP boards.

If we don't like having this done to us, then we should not do it to others.

Another thing I would love to add to this subject.

Some people don't even talk to you like you are retarded just for the fact that they think you are retarded. Take for example, some one who works with children or actual mental disabled people. Sometimes, those people are so used to talking with a certain tone, it actually transfers into regular conversation. I have met a few people like this, and I have seen them talk to older normal adults like they were 5 years old. It kind of humorous.
