It's late here and all I can hear is this goddamit fire alarm. My hearing is sensitive as it is so this noise isn't nice for me. I can't tell where it is coming from but it doesn't sound like it is gonna be stopping soon. I am gonna be tired for work tomorrow too now....

I did a bit of investigating and it was the neighbouring apartments alarm (fire or burglar, who knows). I couldn't see any smoke or smell anything and the door was locked so it looked ok.
I stuck some tissue in one ear and then put the other one on the pillow. I slept soundly for half an hour then then needed to reposition the tissue. HEY PRESTO. THE ALARM HAD STOPPED...
WOOOO....

I have had a drink in the evening for the last four days (which is something I don't like doing) so I promised not to drink last night. I wanna get back into my four dry nights a week phase). I only drink at weekends normally, and I feel much better for it.

I hate smoke alarms, mum set ours off the other day when she was burning dinner and to make it stop she got a broom and whacked the thing off the roof until its batteries fell out and it stopped. Now, whenever you put the batteries back in it starts making that horrible beeping noise...
At least I wanted burnt food for dinner...

Better to have an annoying alarm than no alarm. I was talking to a friend of mine last week on the phone and he was saying "Hold on for a minute, someone is pounding at the door. Hmmm. It smells pretty bad all of a sudden. [At which point I hear someone else yelling "FIRE"] WHOA! I gotta call you back later - the apartment next to mine is burning. <click>" I talked to him the next day. He said there was no alarm and no sprinklers. He and the neighbor were taking pots full of water from the bathtub and dumping it on the fire until another neighbor got the fire hose from the hall. Then the fire department came, yada yada. I was in a house that was on fire once. Scary stuff.

My sympathies. I hate fire alarms too.
My next door neighbours house is deserted but their alarm was still active for a while. One night it went off and it took several hours for the fire service to come and deactivate it. That was one seriously loud alarm too.
I was just about at the point of getting dressed and driving somewhere, anywhere to get away from it when they turned it off.
My wife, who was pregnant at the time, heard it, expressed annoyence and then promptly dropped back off to sleep! How I wish I could do that!
Don't get me wrong, fire alarms are great for getting people out of a burning building quick, but why do they have to keep going off for hours afterwards..
Thankfully, car alarms seem to reset much quicker these days than the used to. That was a pet hate of mine too.

How about a friendly robotic voice that says "Excuse me, it appears there may be a fire - please leave the building in a safe and efficient manner".

IN FACT.... I reckon the loudness is the main reason why people smash them, turn them off, remove the batteries etc... or simply don't get one.
Picture this scenario....
You are making some toast.... a bit of the bread is touching the elements.... don't mind, adds flavour... oh no, smoke. THE FIRE ALARM... It is so loud.... PANIC PANIC PANIC.... Broom handle. SMASH... Phew... it has stopped. Better not get another one in case I want toast again.
If it were a nice beep beep beep or some sort of siren that would be different from you alarm clocks etc , audible throughout the house, but not painfully so, you'd hear it... that would be fine. You wouldn't mind it going off when you are making toast. You wouldn't want to smash it to get rid of the sound. You could happily stroll over to it and switch it off.

they are always on the ceiling too... You can't reach the thing to switch it off...

What can we call this sport? A bit like clay pidgeon shooting, but with fire alarms... PULL....
all the doors in my house are fire doors - meaning they automatically close unless you wedge them open. This is annoying when you want a pee in the middle of the night. You can find your way to the bathroom with the light from the bedroom. Have just enough time to get to the bathroom before the door of the bedroom closes and everything becomes pitch dark... But getting back is awful. I should really use the light switch.
