If I had a Death Note...
I wouldn't use it at all. I'd give it back to the Shinigami.

I'm running this poll.

I believe it belongs in the PPR because I am asking about the Death Penalty. Specifically, what would happen if you were offered the power of life and death over anyone whose names and faces were accessible.

I want to look at the attitudes of those on WP.

So, please answer the poll, and leave some more specifics about your answer to each question (such as how far you will go)

I am assuming a few things here:

*I'd assume that most would not want to obtain the Shinigami Eyes. I doubt that anyone I am asking here would be THAT desperate to know a name.

*Also, L does not exist. We're talking about having a Death Note, not being in the Death Note universe.

Okay, so, would you dare use a Death Note?

(I know the options beyond the first few aren't relevant to normal people's attitudes, but I'm covering all bases, just in case).

Why stop with criminals. Virtually unlimited access to mass murder can do so much more.

I'd use it for revenge.

But I'd never do a "real world" thing, just a fantasy one. Makes me either very common sensical or a coward.

With my prosopagnosia? You've got to be kidding. I'm terrible with both names and faces, so I wouldn't even be able to use it effectively. Sad

I'd also think that it'd be immoral to use it and that I'd go power crazy... I'd give it back. Embarassed

I think most people who use it would go power crazy after the first few killings even if they don't want to become a god (similar to Light). I'd keep it, but only use it in self-defense or maybe in cases against extreme people who are already killing hundreds of people(i.e. Osama Bin Laden, maybe Kim Jong-Il). Of course, bounty hunting for the government could be fairly profitable using it with no risk to yourself....

The Westboro Baptist Church. That was a no-brainer.

I voted "I will only use the Death Note to kill any who stand in my way for material gain!". I would actually use it but not let anyone know I have it nor even hint to it.

The option I wanted to take wasn't on the list, though probably it aligns with Mikami's way of thinking more than anyone else's in the show.

I'd not kill all criminals. Many crimes are just too petty to bother with, or not done out of malice, which is what makes true evil. I'd target those who knowingly and willingly did damage to those who were weaker than themselves - bullies and abusers, basically. Some would be famous or well-known, people that most everyone would know and agree that the world was better off without. Others would just be those people I know who best exemplify the concept of the "banality of evil" - those average, everyday, supposedly decent people who escape the law's notice but who go home and terrorize their families, go out with friends and belittle them and treat them like dirt beneath their shoes, go to school and relentlessly whittle away at any sense of self-worth their students or peers might have, or otherwise take advantage of people who have no will or means to fight back, and make no effort to stop.

I'd do it by having them commit suicide after writing detailed, not-easily-disposed-of suicide notes in which they listed the ways in which they had damaged the people around them, so no one would mourn them, and realize that the best thing they'd done in their entire lives was off themselves. I'd space it out, and almost all of these people have wronged so many that very few could establish a connection between me and them, if they even suspected that someone else had willed it at all.

I'm not really familiar with the concept of a 'death note' or anything like that, but if I have any understanding of what's being talked about I'd have to agree with BokeKaeru; there are good people who make mistakes or who end up in bad circumstances (usually get caught too easily) just like you have rather deliberate and insatiable pieces of work who literally can't change what they are. Many of the worlds psychopaths would be a great call; pretty much anyone who can enjoy victimizing people. Trouble anyone would have with that power, most people don't make their full intentions really known and evident so they probably would have to stick with the most extreme cases, anything less and they run the risk of drawing too many assumptions.

This is a tricky situation. People have to die and we mustn't be attached to life. Having the power of Death would get out of hand for people who are only interested in themselves, or their loved ones. One would have to be willing to even sign their family's name on the list--justice must be blinded from these attachments.

It would have to be put to use on criminals (murderers, rapists, thieves--who will not change their ways), those who stand against and corrupt the people, and also those who are willing to remove the power from you--whoever they are. Don't forget that "innocent" victims would have to be killed for a "greater good".

In the end, the person who has this power (in this case me) has to understand that people will have to die irregardless of his or their wants. After all, war is a normal occurrence and we can't go about killing everyone from the opposing side.
